Hello there... I just registered and this will be my first post. Im posting all the way from Indonesia. Two thumbs-up to E46fanatics.com, quite an informative forum regarding E46.

I drive a Mauritius Blue 2001 325i with auto-tranny, thats having problem with erratic/jumping RPM and poor fuel consumption. Let me break it down to you guys.

1. Whenever im slowing down or coasting and letting go of the gas pedal, the rpm would slightly rev up and down. Please note that the revs dont jump up and down while im idling in P, N or D.

2. The poor fuel consumption just happened recently. Ive been getting an average of 22L/100km or 1ltrs/4.4km. The car only travels 2km/day since i live nearby my office.

3. I got the car scanned by a specialist, faulty camshaft position sensor and faulty thermostat got those two items changed as well as a new fuel pump. cleaned the ICV, checked for vacuum leaks, cleaned the MAF this morning with CRC MAF cleaner, and its still occuring.

Im guessing its either a faulty MAF or maybe an 02 Sensor. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

revving when driving is normal I believe because mine does that too when I left off the gas pedal while cruising.

when was the last time you did a tune up?
also drive around without using the brakes and stop see if any one of the brake discs are getting very hot. I am thinking a stuck caliper.

Thanks for the reply guys...

@csl323 It's currently at 68,777. The previous owner didnt use it much, it was maintained at a certified bmw dealership.

@jasonbimmer I just bought the car two months ago, after i got tired of the underpowered 318i E46. This started happening after i changed the right rear wheel bearings, if im not mistaken, maybe theres a correlation since they need to take off the rear calipers off when doing the job?. It would only happen when im coming to a stop at 30-40km/h when my foot are of the pedals and brakes. i'm assuming the poor fuel consumption is due to the ridiculously bad traffic here in Indonesia, but then again we have a '08 330i that does a slightly better gas mileage. I havent done a proper tune-up. When i got the car it had new spark plugs and new air filters.

Im also noticing that the car upshifts rather late. Could it be as simple as a clogged fuel filter?

Dear All... i got the car scanned today. Nothing came up, except for a faulty ASC sensor, got that cleared and all is well. But still having low fuel consumption and the rpm is still slightly jumping up and down while letting go of the gas pedal. In idle, everything is perfectly normal... Any suggestions guys?

The poor fuel consumption is because you are driving 2 km and turning it off. My wife drives less than 2 miles to work and she never gets more than 15 mpg unless we use the car on a trip. The longer the drive, the higher the mpg.
Hi there.. Thanks for the reply. I wouldnt mind having 15mpg, as thats what our 330i averages in the nasty stop and go traffic here in Indonesia. My car is currently averaging 10mpg.

I too am having similar symptoms in my car, around the 2k rpm mark.
If I give it more gas than it wants, especially while climbing uphill, the rpm needle will not rise and sometimes even fall. The moment I let off the gas pedal, the needle jumps high, and there's plenty of power again. The gas mileage has been awfully low as well.

I have besian seals for the vanos unit waiting to be installed. Hopefully that would solve my issues.

Economy is probably low due to the short drive. Check your spark plugs, clean the maf, check for any cracks in your intake boots, run fuel injector cleaner, etc.
I did all that already before this problem occured. Im going to take another look at the intake boots. Fuel injector cleaner i've done that already.. I'm going to go get it scanned at another shop this weekend and see what they say. If nothing else comes up, im gonna take it to the stealership...

I am having the exact same issues in the same RPM range 2000-2500 RPMs jumping all over until it switches out that gear or if I press harder on the gas pedal.

Runs smooth in all other RPM ranges and I haven't nopticed a drop in fuel economy. 132K miles

Hi, how's everyone doing? Im currently still having the same issue with my car..

1. If im cruising at 50mph-70mph and i slightly step on the pedal, it would bog down instead of downshifting. I would have to step on it abruptly to make it downshift.

2. If im slowing down when approaching a turn or to stop at a redlight the rpm would jump slightly up and down until it downshifts to a lower gear.

3. Gear changes are smooth, sometimes the car would shift rather late, only occasionally it would make a harsh downshift.

4. I had a CPS changed, but since i was low on cash i bought the Febi-Bilstein. I have a new fuel pump, but have not changed the fuel filter.

5. Got the car scanned and no codes, no CEL.

Im hoping that its a bad CPS and/or clogged fuel filter. Other than that the car runs fine.

Any ideas?
