Hi all,

I've had some problems with my 01 330ci with fairly high mileage and zero modifications. I have read all of the popular threads on this topic:

My Issues:
  • Intermittent Choppy and hesitant acceleration (normal driving) under 3k RPM's
  • Intermittent poor/loopy idle
  • Rare complete engine stall
  • Intermittent quick and minor rattle as I shift into second gear from 2-3k

I've done:
  • Replaced lower intake pipe
  • Air filter
  • Fuel pump
  • Fuel filter
  • Fuel pump relay
  • Replaced poor Bremi Coils/plugs (found one small drop of oil in the 3rd cyl)

Before someone says "stop randomly replacing parts", please note that a lot of these parts are mandatory maintenance anyhow and my car is high mileage.

Anyhow after I replaced the coils and plugs the car fired right up and ran like new for a few days before the problems returned. I tried removing the MAF plug and the car now runs very smoothly without stalling.

Things ive heard:
  • DISA Vlave
  • Cam position sensor
  • Fuel filter
  • General vacuum leak post-MAF
  • VANOS seal

I'm considering clearing the CEL codes and seeing what pops up this time. Awfully awkward taking a girl out in this thing... Could anyone suggest what I should do going forward?:hmm:

Thanks mates

You also NEED to purchase an OBDII scan tool.

You need a tool that supports these features: Emission Readiness Monitors, Freeze Frame and Real Time data,

For as little as $30 you can have a tool that does everything you need. Actually the cheaper tools have capabilities to record data to a CSV file so the data can be graphed as needed.

If you have an Andriod phone or tablet, a $5 App and a $15 interface.

If you have an iPhone, iPad or iTouch, a $10 App and a $25 interface.

If you have a Windows laptop you can get ODBWiz with interface for under $30.

Some other low cost options -

$33 - http://www.amazon.com/Autel-AULMS310...=pd_sbs_auto_3

$43 - http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan...sim_sbs_auto_4

I have not used these specific tools, but it looks like they offer most features that are needed.

And you can get a very good stand alone OBDII scan tool for just under $100, or step up a bit and likely get a very good tool for around $160.

Search the Launch CReader VI or CRP123/129 and see what they can do for over 30 different manufacturers for likely between $100-$200.

You need to monitor your engine temperature and Long Term Fuel Trim values and post this information back for review.

You NEED to replace the CCV system and clean out the dipstick tube, see the info in my Engine Temp link below about the yellow/brown goo and the dipstick/CCV system.

Also you have a 330, DO NOT purchase a MAF yet and hopefully the car does not have a cheap/counterfeit MAF on the car now.

Also you need to finger print your O2 sensors and see what they look like.

See graphs below with a lazy Bank 1, Sensor 1 O2 sensor that did not trigger any DTC's.
