hey all i got a oil leak i cant find where its coming from somewhere around the oil filter it managed to bathe my alternator to the point it stopped working any ideas where it may be coming from much appreciated.
Power steering lines to and from the PS reservoir. That's the only thing that's on top of the alternator. You're not the first!

Possibilities in addition to those mentioned:
1. Lower vanos line connection spray?

2. Dipstick tube: owner had the oil coming out of the dipstick connection

3. CCV or tube cracked - oil spraying out the Oil Separator or one of the connecting tubes.

Edit: There is a thread or sticky somewhere on this forum that documents all the common oil leaks - have you referenced that?

no, but i have now, thank you. with the info given i believe its the oil filter gaket
Too funny - Didn't offer that one as it is probably the most common leak our cars have and thought you'd ruled out the easy ones.

You'll be glad to know that the part is only about $5 and will give you a great opportunity to do the CCV change at the same time

Worth checking that oil filter housing gasket.. so easy to replace and cheap. Good diy´s in youtube.
I did it with this youtube video, this guy is great and he tells all torques too.

Another +1 on the OFHG. How many miles on the car? If the CCV is still original, I'd do that at the same time, as well (more room to work with the OFH out of the way).

Here's a good thread with some helpful info/links re: CCV and OFHG DIY: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1071842.
Links under CCV and OFHG in this post might also be useful to reference: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8999585&postcount=2.

Lots of other things you can do "while you're in there" if you want to make the most efficient use of your time.
