Hi guys,

I'm recently converted from being an Audi to a BMW owner!

Must say i'm well impressed! The only thing getting to me is the poor quality of sound from the stereo.

i've got the Harman Kardon up grade, but it has no bass!!!!

I've turn the switch on by the gear change,
i've checked the connection on the amp (part no. 65.12-06 921 050 01) & the 6x9 subs? (part no 65.138 376 309) all o.k.

If you crank the bass up on the head unit it sounds crap!!!!

it would be great if someone could help me, cos if i had hair i'd be pulling it out! :)

Cheers for reading this, hope you can help.

Martyn.

Does it just sound bad, or do you get no sound out of the 6x9's?
If all front/rear speakers sound good to you and the only problem is the bass, just get an aftermarket amplifier and subwoofer(s).

The HK system in the touring does not have the extra amp and subs that the other body shapes get, so bass is very poor.

Best bet is to add an extra amp and sub, there are three ways to go in the Touring :

1) Just add a sub in an enclosure, ideally that can be easily unplugged, loose some boot space when it's there and bass when you need the space.

2) Modify the hatch on the right above the battery so that you lose a small amount of boot space but always have the bass. You won't get as much bass and you'll not be able to use the rigid formed boot liners, you'll need to use one of the ultra think woofers e.g. the ones from Pioneer.

3) Use the spare wheel well and under floor compartment for the amp and sub, you lose no boot space, only the underfloor compartment, and can get quite a decent sized sub under there. I've seen some aftermarket replacement floors that you can get with built in enclosure, sorry don't have a link but I think they were German.

Cheers Chaps,

What do you think if i do the following:-

For the short term I've got a Sony cdx-ca900 Head unit, if i get a fascia and lead to install this ( can you still connect the steering wheel controls to the remote in with an adaptor?)

long term i want to install a sat nav.

Then use the sub out to a amp and sub.( i have an amp and bazoka tube in working order from when iwas a kid) at least this will test the theory with minor expence.

what do you think?

answer to CA1242 question sound is very poor, minimal volume from the 6x9's it sounds like a ford escort system! Crap!!!!!!!!

Any info would be great.

Thanks

how can i connect an amp and subs without taking out the HK amp?

will i need a filter to remove the bass from the existing speakers?

Tap into radio outputs (under the rear section of floor in the touring) and use either an amp that will take speaker level inputs or use a LOC to convert speaker level to line level inputs. Most amps have a low pass filter for use when driving subs, tune this for the sub you are using and probably turn the bass down a little to give the stock speakers an easier time. It won't give perfect results, but it will be a lot better then stock.

To get really good quality sound you have to remove the HK amp.
