For sure this law will not apply to California. They are looking to make cows illegal because their farts are contributing to global warming. The next law will be that its illegal for people to breathe out because the co2 we exhale is harmful to the planet
Isn't it illegal to breathe in California already, unless you're undocumented?

I do wonder how long we will actually get to drive these cars!

According to some, less than 12 years when the world ends. By now the ice caps were supposed to have melted and NYC under water.

I’ll be finding a different country to live in if we outlaw ICEs

Even if I got rid of my OEM cats and installed headers, I'd probably still have a high-flow cat welded in further downstream. A catless exhaust stinks and stains the bumper. :thumbdwn:
Agreed catless exhaust has a very bad smell. turns your BMW jewel into smelling like a broken down jalopy. also makes car loud.

Now, I no longer have to worry about my cats going bad and now have the option of LEGALLY sporting a pair of catless headers:str8pimpi
Ebay here I come!
not sure it would be legal still. not having to get tested isn’t same thing. new cars in CA are exempt for first 6-8 years of testing but that does not mean they can legally take off US government regulated emissions equipment.
CA also has had certain rural counties exempt for decades now.

When I lived in CA, '87 through '04, it was 25yrs even there. I admit that I'm not sure what their current sitch is since I've not lived there in 15yrs, but it would surprise me if they had taken away the age out clause.
in CA it’s year 1975 and older cars. they’re trying to move up cut-off now to 1983 model year.

If I was to guess I'd say that they stopped the rolling 25 years exemption in '00 and it hasn't moved since.

I remember the last year that I had to get my '68 GTO smogged and ended up having to take it to a "a guy" because the book said that it was supposed to have EGR but it didn't because Pontiac didn't start using EGR until '74 when they put cats on. Up to that point they'd achieved the same results by using high swirl heads.

just came accross this in a search:
(1a) 1975 & Older Exempt - Under the old smog laws, 1975 and subsequent model year vehicles became exempt from Smog Check when they turned 30 years old (30-year rolling exemption). A 1976 model year vehicle was exempt in 2005, a 1977 in 2006, etc.
(1b)As of April 1, 2005, exempt from smog check requirements are any motor vehicle manufactured prior to the 1976 model year. All vehicles 1976 and newer vehicles will be tested according to state emission law. This law repeals the 30-year rolling exemption.
