I sold my 2002 330i (silver) and got brand new G35 coupe (Ivory Pearl) last year. I only had my 330i for about 14 months and loved it every day of it. I had Step, Xenon, 18” wheel/tire package and only aftermarket options I did were M steering wheel and clear lights. When I first saw the G35 coupe spy photos back in late 2002, I got very interested. After test driving it at the local Infiniti dealer, I was sold instantly for its smooth power and handling, but most importantly for its exhaust sound. I bought my 330i for $37K (with $2,300 dealer discount) and sold it for $35K cash to a guy after only 9K miles (I had 2nd car), so I didn’t lose much money at all.
I know G35c is not a perfect car, as any other cars, but it certainly has one of the best value in the market today. For one thing, it has so-so looking interior compared to 330i but after while I got used it. If I had 330i performance package, which wasn’t available in 2002, I would probably kept it, just for its carbon looking interior alone. I got my G35c for only $33K but only thing missing is Navigation and it has every options already, including leather, sunroof, heated seat, 18" wheel/tire, limited slip diff, Xenon and etc. A similarly equipped 330i or 330ci would cost at least $10K more. From my past experience, Infiniti’s (Nissan) long term reliability is equal to, or better than, BMW. Oh, the Infiniti dealer/service level is FAR superior to BMW, hand down. I’m not sure about the resale value, but current prediction from Edmunds seems pretty good for G35c, so I’m not worry too much about it.
Both 3 series and G35c are great cars, so there is no real winner. Even performance wise, they are pretty about the same according to many car magazines, but I swear that my G35c is at least 1 sec quicker to 60mph compared to my old 330i. You guys can disagree all you want but I know my G35c can beat any non-modified 3 series out there, both straight line or cornering. No flame here, I just say what I see and feel. It depends on your taste of automobile and G35c was for me. And another big reason that I switched was that there are just way too many 3 series in this Silicon Valley, like the Britain’s CAR magazine once said about the downside of 3 series, quote “every man and dog has one”. When I first got my G35c, my car stood out and almost everyone looked at it everywhere I went. There are lot more G35c on the street now, but nothing compared to the 3 series that virtually cover the roads in Silicon Valley.
If I can summarize both cars, 330i is a luxury car that is very sporty but G35c is a sport car that is very luxury.
Well, I might go back to 3 series after looking at the next generation E90 photos, which look pretty nice, especially the new M4 coupe. Also the new S4 looks damn good too.
