I recently pulled my engine wiring harness module for some refreshing as I was also pulling the intake manifold for a pass of cleaning, CCV, OFHG, Vacuum hoses, coolant system etc etc from the "I just bought a craigslist E46 task list"

I am experienced with both cars and custom circuitry but this is my first BMW after a bunch of other Japanese track cars.

I redressed all the runs with new wire loom / heat shield wrap, zip ties for strain relief, cleaned up the box etc and despite hearing many claims of "all these connectors are keyed and can only go one place." obviously a few of them are the same head design and/or number of pins.

I had the fun experience of accidentally plugging the oil pan sensor into the other three pin plug under the starter and disassembling the intake manifold from the head a second time to correct that issue without damaging anything from poor access.

I also noticed a few other two pin connector with a similar plastic key shape and my inexperience left me searching for a diagram of the MS43.0 M54 engine harness plug layout but I have yet to find one that is well labeled and related to the shape and plug type of the module as opposed to just a straight electrical diagram with wire colors and schematic.

Came across a hand drawn one on google images but have yet to find a thread here or elsewhere with the plug type, layout and destination as they are connected to the engine module.

Anyone point me to a good thread I am missing or a diagram with good labeling and ideally plug type names?

Car is running now and I think I have them correct but I would love a definitive source to double check my work.

Thanks!

Check out www.newtis.info it's a bit clunky to search through but it has good wiring diagrams.

That three pronged connector under the starter is the crankshafts position sensor ... it is reachable from under the car but awkward to get too ... sucks you had to pull intake twice.

Edit: A6000 is the engine computer (dme) while x60003 is the wiring harness for the many of the engine sensors under the hood (on which the crank position sensor and oil level sensor both reside).

The tricky pair is the connector for the oil pressure switch and the Evap solenoid. With a bit of stretching they can be swapped. The distinguishing detail is that the oil pressure switch has only one pin, and the connector has only one contact installed. (Unrelated detail: the oil pressure switch and the starter are the only things that rely on the block being grounded.)

People worry about swapping with the oil pressure and temperature connectors on the oil filter housing. They look similar, but are keyed differently.

The ones that can really bite you are the oxygen sensor connectors. There is no indication of which is front or back.

Hey, welcome to the forum! Sounds like you do things the right way; you'll fit right in around here.

I've only ever seen one annotated photo with accurate labels of the harness "octopus". Wish I had saved it as I cannot locate it in Google Image searches. Would be awesome if you made one and posted it on here!

This youtube video covers most of them:

If you haven't seen it yet, have a look at our Important Threads and Links. Lots of good stuff in there.
