Hey guys, been a lurker for a while--lots of good DIY stuff here so thanks everyone for contributing.
First time post for me
Just did my oil filter housing gasket on an 01 325i. Pretty straight forward job. I put everything back together and started her up and the engine is making a pretty loud ticking noise around the vanos & valve cover. Sounds similar to when she's low on oil, but worse.
There's also a somewhat inconsistent rattling/knocking thats happening now deeper in the engine .. The knocking
I checked and im not leaking any oil, the oil levels are fine, etc. I dont know why changing the OFHG would create a new problem? Unless I knocked the vanos line in the back of the housing or something...
Just did this job yesterday as well. make sure and double check everything you took and, bolts, clamps, etc. might as well do the vcg if you havent yet too, then while youre in there spark plugs and vanos seal and o ring? i made the mistake of not doing the vanos but i no longer leak oil
Only oil light is the 5 secs or so the yellow oil light comes on when i first start--which i think means my oil sensor is bad, but been that way for years.. would a bad oil sensor also mean that its NOT showing me any potential issues? Like oil pressure and such?
Yeah drives fine.
I really dont think I got anything in the actual OFH, not much to fall in there. The old gasket was seated completely.
I suspect its a pulley, which is weird to me if it turns out to be that ... I'll take the belts off and see if I need to replace.
So did some tinkering -- turns out 2 pulleys were going bad which was making majority of the noise, and the intermittent knocking was from my fan pulley bolts being a bit loose. Swapped them out and bam. no noise.
Attention to detail!
But I'm still leaking some oil to the left side (passenger) of the engine--would VANOS lines be culprit? I did the VCG last year so it shouldnt be that..

I have this ticking or knocking noise coming from my engine and I was hoping someone can tell me want could be making it do that and how to fix it. I noticed that the car was making I really really small noise then I checked the oil and saw that it was dry (Not good I know) but I went to the nearest auto parts and filled up the oil but by the time I got there the noise got louder. I also but engine treatment (STP)
First rule of car ownership: If the oil light comes on, or the oil pressure indicator begins acting strangely, immediately stop the vehicle and turn of the engine. Check the oil level. If it is low, do NOT restart the vehicle. Walk, hitch a ride, call AAA, to get oil before the vehicle is restarted.
I'm afraid that you have trashed the engine.
That's the weird thing. The oil light never came on. Someone told me to put Motorkot in it.
