EGR Valve delete?

Hi everyone,

I have a 1999 320D that's running pretty well. But it's nearly at 400.000km (I know!).

I was wondering if it'd be safe to do an EGR valve delete on it? What's the consensus (if there is one) on doing this on this engine with this ECU?

If yes, then what else can be taken out?

If not, then an explanation would be very appreciated.

I live in a very warm climate, by the way. Temperatures from 0 celcius in winter (very rarely) to over 30 celcius most days.

Well, that is part of the original question (whether it's advisable or not).

If it is advisable, might it reduce engine wear? Reduce points of failure? Unlock more power?

If it is NOT advisable, might it be because it can damage the engine? Result in higher fuel consumption?

I'm trying to learn so I'm asking. There's conflicting information online and I thought I'd ask people with actual experience.

EDIT: I've also gone through threads on this forum, but most are related to EGR valve problems rather than whether a delete is a good or bad idea.

EDIT 2: I live in a country where there are no emissions inspections (or any other kind of inspection, really, other than VIN checks).

EDIT 3: I'm also asking because my local mechanic says he does it with every car he works on, but he mostly works with pick-ups and Japanese cars (from around the same era as the e46, though). So I don't know whether to follow his advice, or whether there's something specific to the e46 and this engine that would make it inadvisable.
