Hey guys, I drive a 2001 E46 coupe with 130,000+ miles. I turned my car on today to find it made unusual "puttering" sounds and smelled of burnt plastic. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the problem may be?
With 130k has your VCG been replaced? This won't cause the engine to "pudder" but I know before I replaced mine very seldom when the oil would drip onto the splash guard I would see a little smoke and smelt an aweful plastic burning smell. Check the passenger side of the motor and see if you can see any oil residue on the splash guard, its located right above the exhaust mani.
OP, quick easy diagnosis.
1. As 12323 said, see if check engine light is on. If so, head to nearest Autozone and do scan.
2. Check the oil level. Oil level should be higher than usual when the engine's cold
3. See if the engine produces smoke. Start the engine, open the hood and see if the smoke coming out. Have someone to monitor the dash needles.
