I've searched through the forums but I didn't find an answer to my question. To make this short, caught my car overheat 3 times ever since i bought it. This only happens when the ac is on, driving in traffic (it's a manual transmission). I heard Behr is the oem for making the electrical fan, so i was wondering if i can buy an after market direct fitment for around $80. And if anyone has bought one before, does it come with the relay switch? And no my over heat is not due to leaks, I've replaced the entire cooling system a month ago with oem parts. I just want to makto sure if i can get by with an $80 fix for a year or two, it's getting hot down here in san diego, and I'm not usually turning the ac on because of this problem, any ideas would help, thanks.

Yes it's easy, i took it off when i replaced the radiator, i just messaged a seller from ebay, he says the electrical fan doesn't come with the relay switch, I know for sure my problem is with the relay switch, but i rather replace the fan and the relay switch all together.

I don't really like those, they might be loud, i rather have the electrical fan, but I can't even find the relay switch anywhere to buy (this is the control unit on top of the fan, the little black box) so annoying, I've read through the forums and no one really has a clear solution to this issue that many people are having when turning on the ac, the engine overheats sometimes. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on the guage.

EDIT _ Having read above how you are referring to the Relay Switch you should read the Electric Fan Guide to better understand how this fan actually works with the inputs to DME and the Final Output calculations to the Fan Module - Not sure what you mean by relay switch as there is no switch - even the lower rad coolant temp sensor is NOT a switch for the fan. If you want to know if your fan works at all find some of my other threads for testing without INPA.

FYI/

Bosch was the original (OE). Hasn't been made since 2012. Very few left - priced from $450 - $600. Everything else is Chinese /Taiwan:

Really doesn't matter which one you buy (outside of OE) as the aftermarket fans all seem to be sourced from the same Taiwanese factory with different labels (I.e. Behr, CoolXpert, TYC etc.) the only difference seemingly is FCP will replace it when it fails - although I'll bet you're on the hook for shipping?

Before you install whatever brand fan assy you buy - if you will be driving your e46 during winter in a snow/salt area buy a $5 tube of RTV and seal all around the fan module (you'd be best to remove the 4 screws holding it on the shroud to do this) - especially the wire connection areas - this is a weak point on every one I've seen - the terminals start to corrode from salt and moisture and the module gives out.

BMW-North E46 Electric Fan Guide More info here on the various Fans and how they operate

I run my original e46 Bosch Fan motors, shroud and Blade with Bosch Fan modules that I removed from late model donor Volvo & Mazda electric fan assemblies (from southern states) - thereby maintaining OE setup for under $50 per fan assembly.

Edit: BTW the Behr Fan is $259 at FCP - that's pretty steep for a Chinese AM fan. The Bosch OE was only a little more than that not 4 years ago. The Behr fan offered is discussed in the following thread:

"The relay, or the bosch fan module" I don't think that comes with the fan assembly at all, even the link you provided, it seems like it's only the fan without the relay(little black box hooked on top of the fan shroud) and no I'm not hooked for shipping yet, this is why I'm trying to get answers here before i buy anything bad for my car. The fan works fine, different speeds of the fan engage as the temperature of the engine rises, but I've had the engine overheat 3 times, lucky all 3 times i pulled over before the guage went into the red zone. This ONLY happens when the ac is on. This is why i think it's the relay or the fan module. So if i buy the fan from the link you provided, will it come with the relay?

The little black box on top of the fan has little to do with the electric cooling fan other than it is attached to the shroud. It is your auc sensor for clean air detection inside the cabin.

The fan module is bolted onto the shroud at 3pm using 4 torx screws. Unless you have the Siemens fan which has the PWM interpreter inside the fan motor housing. Again read the guide.

Don't buy anything till you understand what works and does not and what parts are connected to what.

This (image below) has nothing to do with cooling or fan operation. It is an auc sensor.

Well exactly what is its job? What does the black box actually do other than sitting on top of the shroud? Because when i disconnect it, the fan immediately stops working. So I'm sure it does something. Plus I don't seem to find it on your guide. So could you please clarify, or give me an idea. I'll make sure i read the whole thing tonight as soon as i get home.

it's not in my guide cause it has f*ck all to do with the operation of the electric fan. Search auc sensor function and do some research. I give up.

Here's the cheapest manual aftermarket fan (new) that I can see ($81). Made in Taiwan. The silver box you see attached to the shroud is the fan module. You will transfer your auc sensor onto the new shroud. This will plug n play into your car. 2000 323. Should take 15 mins to remove old fan and install new. One torx screw. One plastic rivet.

It might just last two years seeing your in S. California.

My e46's use only Bosch oe fan components. But I understand others may be looking for a cheap fix.

Either help out or don't, or you can f*ck off with your guide **** and what not... I'm not a mechanic to know all this, a little knowledge from others would be nice, but you seem like an a$$h0le, so f*ck off with ur p13ce of 3h1t attitude

Ok buddy. Get a new auc sensor and put in a clutch fan on your manual. That'll fix it. First item on a Google search of the auc sensor links to this forum and fully explains it. You don't need to be a mechanic to do that.

Edit. And btw I explained what the auc was in post #10 so why did you then ask again what it was for.

Ok I'll f@ck off cause even my youngest daughter who's also not a mechanic could understand this better than you seem to. At least she would read what was presented.

Good luck
