E46 2002 Overheating

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding my overheating problem, my e46 has a problem in a hose that connects the coolant container to the engine. I’m not sure the name of this hose. The issue is a leak. I need to replace it. However, I’ve been using regular water to drive around 14 milles maximum on weekends. Last week I drove for no more than 8 miles and the car started overheating. When I arrived to a mall opened the hood I noticed that the water was still there, but it was so hot. Yesterday I had the same problem until the car turned off automatically. Do y’all think that is only the coolant that is needed and to repair this hose or do you think it might be something else? The question is because I’ve been driving like this for almost 4 months and I never had this problem. I don’t think that is the thermostat.

Picture? Big or small hose? There are a few hoses so nobody know from your post.
If no camera, then try to draw or paint a pic. (Black and white pencil painting is ok.)

It overheated so much the car turned itself off?

Don't mess around with overheating, as soon as the temp starts rising shut the car off and fix it. Overheating will destroy the engine very very quickly

Sounds like the cooling system has an air bubble in it.

Replace the hose as soon as possible.
Properly bleed the system...Use Sapote's method..search on it.
.....and hope you don't already have a warped cylinder head and/or a failed head gasket.

Don't use regular water in your cooling system... use the proper 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. You can use distilled only for short periods if you have to..

I wouldn't drive my car with a leak. If that hose ruptures, you're all done.

If the leak is bad enough that the system can't pressurize, it will boil-over when the temp hits 212°F. Unfortunately, boil-overs quickly become overheats as more and more of the engine is uncovered by coolant. The weather is getting warmer so you're getting up to 212° when before you weren't. Don't use the a/c until this is fixed.

You MUST increase the pressure, which means fix the leak. Increasing the pressure drastically increases the boiling point. Coolant only increases boiling point by up to 19°F.

If you want to push your luck, drain the water, add 6 qts of concentrated coolant (not 50/50 premix) and fill the rest with water, and burp. That will give you the perfect 67% coolant ratio, until it leaks out.

If you don't get that leak fixed fast, you won't have this car much longer.

Got it, being honest I didn't know that and it was the first time that happened to me, I won't do it again, thank you for the adv

Got it, I'm draining the coolant system right now, thank you Sr.! By any chance do you know how to replace the hose?

Got it now, I didn't know the 6qts adv, I'll be taking this in consideration but being honest, you're right, I need to fix that hose as soon as possible, this overheating problem just happened last week, it's new for me, but the weather is getting warmer as u said, I'll be checking that rn. Thank again for the adv.

This guy gives very good details and good video for many projects. Two links here, the second will help with your immediate problem:

.
This hose is leaking at the connector: no metal locking clip, and the hose swelled up due to ATF from the leaking power steering reservoir hose. This hose connected to the hard pipe which has the other end connected to the back of the water pump on the block. You can just replace the hose and leave the hard pipe intact.
Fix the power steering hose leaking or the new installed hose will be damaged again soon.

Use coolant as it is cheaper than having to replace a warped engine. Could be a bad water pump.

Hopefully it never got below freezing with just water in the system. Plain water can crack the head or block as it freezes and expands.
