E-Brake Drift Question!

I have 2001 manual 330i and wanted to pull a 360 spin. So, I disabled the DSC and Brake Light. Then, I pulled the e-brake to do a 360 spin. The car spun 360 but suddenly a bunch of lights came on and the car went into limp mode where I had no power. I had the car towed to BMW and they told me that a sensor went. Has anyone had this problem? Also, how would I go about being able to pull the e-brake without having any sensor problems? Do I have to disable the ABS system? Thanks Dave.

What did you need the ebrake for? Just cut the wheel and gas it. Your car is rear wheel drive you know.

Now, for quick and sharp 180s - you pull up on the e-brake. Same for j-turns. One my last pair of conti's I went into a empty lot and was doing 180s in the wet with the e-brake.

Don't yank on it either, modulate it. Hope your car is ok.

Hello guys,

Can anyone teach me how to do a 360 spin? All I have to do is cut the wheel and gas it? Do I need to apply any break on it? If I do, when is the right time to apply the break? Thank you for you help :)

cut the wheel hit the gas and throw in in reverse:yikes:

You spun the engine backwards, which is known to damage cam position sensors.

And remember: Only stupid *******s do ebrake turns in their BMWs for no reason.
damn. go easy on the kid.

Thanks guys. Nick, I wanna tell you God loves you and Bible says to lift it each other up not to put them down. If you want prayer about anything e-mail me at Mrbanshee@yahoo.com. Just to let you know the stunt driver in the BMW Films series pulled the e-brake for 85% of the stunts.

Hey YoungBaller, you can't pull a proper 360 donut without an L.S.D. and that is why I pulled the e-brake. Can someone please answer the other questions I posted:

Those stunts are also performed by PROFFESSIONALS on a closed course. Oh and those cars are modified for the movies, which makes it easier to perform stunts.

Plus now that I think about it, in the BMW Films I can't remember anyone ever puling a 360, a bunch of 180's but no 360's.

Ya if u have an XI then what do u do if its in the wet. My friend is able to do it in his audi 1.8t quattro. He says pull the ebrake and then when ur halfway done spinning u drop the ebrake and in 1st gas it and ur car will complete the 360 is this true for AWD cars?

Spun the engine backwards!? :) C'mon.

Using the ebrake is a technique used in rally driving to get the rear to slide out giving you a straighter shot out of the turn.
However, that is a driving technique with no reason to go 360 degrees.

Doing a 360 (full spin), in a parking lot I hope, is much easier to initiate with the ebrake, then by cutting the wheel and applying power. Depending on how fast you're going cutting the wheel won't necessarily give you a 360.
Doing a complete 360 is purely a stunt but it will give you a sense of what it feels like to lose control completely. Thus, doing this in a safe empty parking lot could help your overal driving skills. Knowing how a skid feels and how to potentially control it is an important skill to have.

Once you disengage the DSC, keep holding the button and you will see the "brake" light come on as well. The dealer tech told you a sensor went "out"? Meaning, it fried? If so, then you don't have a problem. A sensor died, so be it. Replace it and move on.

to pull a 360 you don't need the ebrake, that just cuts power to the rear. You can pull it up, but if it's up and u gas it, just a waste. To pull a 90/180 turn on a fwd car, the ebrake is perfect.
On a rwd car, if you start driving in a circle, and then floor it the tail end will start to slide out. You can control the slide by steering input/ throttle control. You can continue this spin for 90/180/270/360/... depending on ur steering and throttle. This would be like a donut. That's why if you have dsc off and you take a corner and give it too much throttle on the exit your tail end slides out and you hear all these stories about how people crashed their car with the dsc off.

For awd cars, you can get the car to spin like a top. complete circle as if u stuck a pipe right down the middle of the car ( top to bottom) and rotated it around that axis.

as for going limp... it's okay happens. Just get it replaced and u should be good to go.

I have a XI, but I never try the technique you said. it sounds interesting and i will go to try it. Does he means pull the ebrake when you just start to make the spin? Thanks

*********

That would be the WRONG way to do it. You don't engage the ebrake and leave it there. You use it to get the rear tires to start sliding as you hard steer the wheel. It's MUCH easier to initiate the donut with the ebrake whether it's FWD or RWD.

I hope no one is thinking they want to try this on the street some time soon?
You need to be in a wide, big, open, CLEAR parking lot where you have room to spin and not hit another car, person, or lamp.

DEPRESS THE CLUTCH

Some of these responses are horrifying.

To learn to do a 180 spin first:
1. Do 30 mph in an empty WET parking lot
2. DEPRESS THE CLUTCH (or you break things again)
3. Yank the wheel hard left (or right)
4. Pull the e-Brake up HARD

3 + 4 must be done the at same time

Tip: HOLD THE EBRAKE BUTTON DOWN. Stunt men probably duct-tape over it to stop the eBrake locking in the on position.

When you learning take it easy; the car spins fast and you want to control it not wreck it. Once you have done it a few times it is second nature to guage the correct speed + amount to turn the wheel.

not sure how helpful it woudl be, but Gran Turismo 3 is an excellent driving simulator. I would toy with the handbrake in GT3 while driving at different speeds and see waht happens. granted the car will never flip in GT3, even if the physics would make it happen, but i bet you could get a decent idea of how a car would spin. though i think mp3_e46 is right, get the 180 down first.
