Just moved from General Forum:

I've searched a bit to see if there has been any effective air box mods for the E46 and couldn't find much.

Coming over from the Audi camp, one of the first things I did to my A4 1.8T for a few HPs was to remove the filter screens, cut holes in the box and add a K&N. The result was pretty impressive.

For the BMW crowd it seems like an entire after market CAI is the perfered way to go

It seems like a few good 3-4" holes on the front of the lower box section would add cold air were most of the CAI draws from anyway.

With all the CAI's sold I was thinking of picking up a cheap used box to sacrifice and test.

Has anyone done this effectively?

The older Porsche 911 (80's model) do this to the stock air box. The box is a big square (putting in a cone filter is much better and gives better access to the engine) and they install a K&N and then drill a number of holes in it to improve air flow. It also changes the sound.

#1 thing you'll find out about bmw's over audi's

you cant tweak them for the kinda gains you can on your audi's

you can spend 10k on mods, short of a SC and you might add 50hp....TOPS

you get that in chips for audi's easily...

Let's be more precise. You mean the turbo Audi's.

e.g. the A4 3.0 doesn't have much potential either
