Just tonight I noticed a small clunking noise appearing to come from the rear driver's side. It's not very loud. I can't hear it when driving around town. I only noticed because I was driving through a drive-through restaurant and the sound reflected off the wall well enough for me to hear it. It speeds up and slows down with the car's speed. Turning doesn't seem to make a difference.

Other than that, I've noticed nothing peculiar about the car. No odd vibrations or other sounds. Rear shock mounts do need replaced (they creak a good bit these days) and will be soon. No other current issues. I'll be crawling under the car tomorrow as it's too dark to check it tonight. I'll try to get the rear lifted this week to do some tugging and pulling.

I've looked around the forums and there seem to be many possible causes but no cases quite like mine. Does anyone have an idea what it may be or where I should look first?

Driver side clunk

I have a clunk or groan in the rear end. Finally had a real BMW mechanic take a listen. He said it was the posit-ration clutches groaning. He added BMW rear end additive and the SAME weight gear oil 50/50 to the rear end. It quieted down significantly. The BMW snake oil is not cheap. But much cheaper than a new rear end.

Its all baseless speculation until you put it up on a lift and see what you have going on.

I figured as much. It is so quiet I can only ever hear it at low speeds next to a wall so I'm not too worried at this point. I won't have access to a lift until spring break but I'll be putting it up on jack stands here soon enough (installing upgraded rear shock mounts). I'll get underneath and start poking around. I'm also replacing tranny and diff fluids over summer so we'll see if that BMW snake oil helps.
