So I have an '01 330ci and have been having issues with my door locks not unlocking when I press the unlock button on my key. I can manually open the drivers side door with the key but I can't open the passenger side at all. Even when I pull the handle or press the unlock button inside the car it won't open. The drivers side door will lock when I press the button on the key. Also my fuel door won't unlock (Nothing like getting to the gas station and looking like a fool cause you can't get your fuel door open.) It has done this occasionally before but would start working fine after a few hours. From reading other posts, my guess is it could be something with the central locking computer behind the glove box. Anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate any help as I can't even put gas in my car at this point without ripping off my fuel door.

Sounds like maybe a joint issue with the actuator and GM5 box. I dont think its the GM5 on its own because surely it would still open mechanically?

I have similar issues (keys won't lock the car remotely, sunroof open for no appearent reasons, all windows roll down when locked, etc...). First step is to make sure your batteries are okay. Then re-initialize the key and make sure you point the key towards the antenna as the final step. Do a search for "key initalization" for the steps. It's really simple (I just don't remember on the top of my head).

working for now

I just did the key re-programming and and at first it didn't work but after i waited a few hours my locks are back to normal. My other key stopped functioning though, probably because i didn't program it when i programmed the first key. I don't know if this actually fixed it because it's done this before. It usually will work on it's own after I wait a few hours. I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks everyone though for the quick responses.

In my experience, sometimes it may take more than one try to initialize the second key (be sure to point the key to the antenna). There is a grace period for the car to recognize the second key so do it right after you get the first key functioning. Let me know if this helps.

If you open the trunk there should be a green manual fuel release knob that you can pull.
Unless this is another one of the euro features that they didn't bother putting on US cars.

Hi just joined the site (havent had my own net conection for a couple of years) but been watching the tec forums from friends PC's for a year or so. Anyway my wifes 316 has the same fault as you describe in the origional post, doors will lock but not unlock, either from the key or the centre consoll. Its been doing it for the year we have had it, and had been to BMW and BMW specialists 3 times for this problem with the previouse owner (my mother in law) its had over £1000 spent on it and NO fix!

I have some experiance with auto electrics (engin looms chopped into new homes ect) but this thing is like a rolling computer! I cant just go poking around with a test light. but so far I'v Figered its not the key, when I try and unlock it from the key the alarm turns off, and the interior light comes on. pluss if I hold the button down for a few seconds all the windows roll down as they should, so it must be a fault with the car.

I'v had three other older BMWs that have had odd faults becuse of the wiring loom at the boot hinge, common fault on e30, e34, e36, that I know of. So I tryed gently moving the loom you see by the boot (sorry trunk) hinge, and it seemed to work ok. The car played up once or twice a week and with presistance the car would open after about 10 mins or so.

The problem is now, my wife told my mother in law about the boot loom when they were out shopping a month or so ago, and she promptly gave it a good yank! now the car is screwed. If we have to lock it, it takes over an hour sitting pressing the centre consol button over and over to unlock EVRY time! :rofl:

sorry did't mean to post yet, was going to say I'm sorry. I know there is alot of txt, and I'll try and keep it breif in the future.

But what do I do next? the car is not verry useable, but its been to BMW and they have prooved themselves unable to help, I cant just throw endless amounts of money at it.

Hope you have better luck that we have, and thanks in advance for any help, or just sympathey.

I had the same problem with my coupe. The dealership worked on it and for the last 3 weeks it hasn't happened to me. I can't remember what they diagnosed it as. I have my paperwork in San Diego, but will be out of town until Friday. I will check my papers and get back to you guys.

I'm having the same problem too I tried reprogramming my key to the car but I have a new alarm system with remote start on my car. Would that make a difference in its performance to lock/unlock? Or does this mean I totally have to replace my door lock actuator?

It's not actually the actuator but instead a faulty piece that must be replaced. I will look up what I had replaced when I get back to SD.

Looked up my paperwork. 51BMZZ03 "Customer states passenger side door will not unlock when trying with remote or interior unlock button check and advise. Found central locking switch defective - internal short found passenger door would not lock or unlock with central locking button - RR remove passenger door panel and checked signals at passenger front actuator - Found no signal input received at actuator. Replaced central locking switch.

this is a common issue that BMW will not acknowledge. I know it is caused by the weather, but I haven't found a fix for it. Usually when it happens, I keep playing with the lock button inside the car, till it unlocks. Once it unlocks the first time, you can just open the door from inside if it happens again later (and the fuel door can be opened). Also I noticed you can play around with the key, keep pressing lock, unlock, lock, unlock,... It eventually opens.

And VMELIK2006, I think BMW sould be more helpfull with this issue. its the one fault with a beutiful car.
P.S. The locks used to work after 5 or 10 mins, but wont even do that now.:wahwah:

Intermittent door lock problems are most likely caused by the GM5 module. Check out this web wage on the subject. www.bmwgm5.com
They described the problem I was having with my door locks to a T and I was able to get my GM5 repaired for cheap.
