Does insurance cover OEM wheel damage?

I submitted an insurance claim to cover two destroyed wheels and tires and an alignment after hitting a huge friggin pothole on the George Washington Bridge in NYC. My insurance co. sent me a check.

Nice! Did your premium go up? what did you have to pay out of pocket?

I have only submitted one claim in my entire life so my rates did not go up. I got a check for the estimated damage minus my $500 deductible. I ended up buying a couple good used wheels for half the price of the dealer price in the estimate so the whole thing only cost me a few dollars.

I tried to file a claim with the NY DOT. Apparently they will actually send you a check if the road hazard was a known problem. Unfortunately, I changed one tire on the off ramp to the Deegan and didn't know a 2nd wheel was bent until a few miles later so I never got a police report. The DOT claim forms require a police report so I got screwed. That's why I went to my insurance company instead.
