Do I really need new bolts?

I'm planning on replacing the oil pan gasket on my 2001 BMW 330i and the transmission has 22 bolts. I've seen it mentioned that the bolts the hold the gasket are one time use and should be replaced when changing the gasket. Is it absolutely necessary to change the bolts or do most of you just keep the existing bolts? My car currently has 140k miles and the gasket has never been replaced as far as I know. I've had it since 69k miles.

Use a socket wrench, not an impact gun on oil/trans pan bolts. They seem to snap off - particularly in rusty areas - when using a gun. You don't want to snap off a pan bolt

^^^ agree
Thanks, this made me realize my mistake. I was reading two different guides and one was for the transmission. I got all mixed up there. Looks like I'll be reusing the existing bolts on the oil pan.
What I like to do is order a small number of replacements, say something like 3, so that during installation if I lose one or if I find one that is particularly rusty, I would replace them. Other than that, it's ok to reuse as they are low torque applications.

I have found oil pan bolts to be loose on various cars over the years. I would not hesitate to put a half turn on an oil pan bolt. If you go to turn a bolt and it doesn't want to be turned, move along. But there are lots of cases where a few bolts in a row will easily take some wrench love, and this will almost always stop an oil pan gasket leak.
