DME/EWS won't sync

I had my battery out for approx. 4 months. Car now cranks but won't start. New to using INPA & ISTA+. Went through resync procedure but still no start. EWS info all looked good (DME line signal, key signal, etc.) ISN info shows ISN# error ecu rejected & Password error ECU rejected. Thinking maybe I could possibly get more info using ISTA+ I tried that. Basically same thing with the error code of 2737 which is sometimes cleared by resync. Also error messages of "A fault occured during start value matching" & "Start value of DME and EWS do not match" Not sure what to do now. DME EWS and Keys are all original to car. I had no problems with system before removing battery and didn't do any repairs to electrical system. Could use some advice. Do I send components out for realign or see if dealer will do outside of car. I don't want to tow to dealer. Should I flash the DME and go that route. Not sure how to do this and have no coding experience but think I could figure it out. 2004 330I ZHP with DME 45.1

I can remotely synch the DME and EWS for you for free. I do this often for forum members. You already have a K+DCAN cable and Windows laptop, so that’s all you need. Send me your phone number in a private conversation and we can get it done.

We did a remote session and looked at a bunch of things, none of which let the engine start.
Current status is engine cranks, we think gets fuel, but not sure if it gets spark.
  • Cleared that 2737 error in the DME
  • Looked at DME live data for clues, there were none
  • Looked for errors in EWS, there were none
  • Looked at EWS live data for clues, there were none
I suspect key and EWS are fine because engine is cranking and there are no EWS error codes, We can see key is sending in EWS anyway.
We are getting a crankshaft speed signal as DME live data shows RPMs while cranking.
Tried the clear flood mode of cranking a while with gas pedal to the floor, in case engine is flooded, no luck.

OP is going to do the following.
  • Check all engine harness connections, since they were recently all disconnected while doing work
  • Check 5-pack fuses in e-box
  • Check DME connectors, pins, etc.
  • Open up DME and check circuit board for any damage
  • Check for spark while cranking
  • Verify fuel pressure at the rail is 50 PSI
  • Check if injectors are providing fuel

Easily done with a long screwdriver placed onto all the injectors and listening for the "click-click while cranking. Will answer a lot of questions!
Remove the spark plugs also and see if they're very wet?
If yes, dry gently with a propane torch. Also remove fuel pump fuse or better yet unclip the injectors electrically and crank the engine for 30 seconds with the plugs out. Dries it out. Clear codes, reinstall plugs and start.

If no, carefully remove a coil. Using rubber gloves reattach it electrically, install a plug and using a screwdriver hold the coil & plug against the metal valve cover. (grounds both)
Crank and look for spark.

Running again! That's the good part but I don't know what the problem was. Went through everything discussed with Bali. Started with the harness connectors all seated properly and in the right place. I even checked continuity between each component connector and 52 pin connector at DME. Opened up the DME nothing remarkable there. Looked like new including all connecting pins & terminals. Checked DME relay, good. 5 Fuse pack & spark good. Fuel pressure 50psi. Was recording cranking engine in attempt to hear injectors firing. Engine didn't sound like it wanted to fire but I pressed the pedal to the floor and it fired right up, to my surprise. Thanks Bali I appreciate all your help and to MrMCar for his input. I will run another diagnostic with INPA but don't expect to see anything at this point.

Possibly, the engine is idling/running a little rough. Initially I thought this may be due to not running for 5 months and would clear up, but not yet. Although I've driven less than 50miles so far. I'll run another scan with INPA and see if there's anything there.
