I did this last weekend and it wasn't too bad.
It took me a while to figure out where the cable pass was. Once you know where the hole is, it's easy. Look for the "x" in the material above the pedals in the firewall.

I made my own connector as well. I used something like these taps from radio shack and they seemed to work fine and make a clean install.

I'm assuming you already have 4 connectors (part number 61130005197 or similar).

Good luck.

Hmmm. That looks different that I was seeing.

The green plug I used looked like this one (plug X10170):

buy my vehicle is an '05.

The instructions I followed where from this thread: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=544160 and this one http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=215481&highlight=cruise+lcm+retrofit

When I got to the step with the green plug, pins 8-10 were empty since the car wasn't wired for multifunction. I used the connectors (called bushing contacts or blade connectors) to add wires on pins 8-10 and then ran 2 wires to the LCM and one to the engine control box. The wires to the LCM are for power and i-bus. Another connector was needed to connect the wire in the engine compartment and is used by the cruise control.

You have exceeded my knowledge. I did look in realoem and it doesn't look like there is a retrofit kit.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BL31&mospid=47610&btnr=66_0039&hg=66&fg=95

"CANNOT BE RETROFITTED, SINCE VEHICLE IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH WIRING AND VARIOUS CONTROL UNITS NECESSARY."

:dunno:

Start a new thread and see if anyone has retrofitted a cruise on your model. It would involve putting in a control unit, the actuator, wiring and maybe brake and clutch switches.

Ive started to do this retro fit. It was all pritty easy to install with the help from this quide, thankyou again, but ive encountered a problem. I have the the bmw e46 318 54plate facelift model. The DDE control module is different from the one in this guide and I dont want to wire the harness up to the wrong connector in case anything goes wrong. Can anyone shed some light on this issue. Ive included some pics of the module and the two different plugs.
A couple of questions:
1) Which engine do you have?
2) On your pic, there is a blue dot. Does the connector pull apart there?

OK. I found that too.

You might read thru this

It is a google translation of a German site so my understanding is not going to be perfect.

Only vehicles with N46 engine
Female terminal branch separated from the A6.
Branch A8 using butt connectors (1) and
Shrink tubing (2) at the open end of the cable
A6 connect feeder.
Black, 58-pin plug X60002 from the
DME control unit unlock and remove.
Branch A7, einpinen to PIN 4 of plug X60002.
Assemble and plug X60002 on DMESteuergerät
reconnect.
Perfectly clear, right?
It looks like there is a slightly different retrofit wiring kit for the N46 that has a pin connector that fits into fits into that socket. The blue wire is extended (using a butt connector) by a brown wire.
In the posts down the page it looks like someone just tapped into the existing wire on pin #4 of x60002 to reuse the connector. I think he just clipped it.

Also note, that the link and the picture you posted are mirrored because one depicts the socket side and the other the plug side.

Good luck.

(Disclaimer time: I'm not a mechanic and I haven't done this before. I don't speak German. I take no responsibility for anything at any time.)

:bump: where can i find just the retrofit cable for the triangle airbag steering wheel...i dont need the buttons that come with the kit for the round airbag steering wheel...just the wires, WHERE THE HELL CAN I FIND JUST THE WIRING HARNESS...ive searched everywhere and the dealership only offers the harness with the buttons for the round airbag steering wheel and its like $300 so i said screw that, im not paying that much because it comes with buttons that i dont need.

Im at the point where im just going to attempt to wire it myself and make my own wiring harness, the main thing i want is just to have volume control and for the buttons to illuminate at night.

If it is the same one as the round one the part number is 61120016012 (the original post has an extra zero on the end).

If you meant the connecting lines at the steering wheel, you can see the part numbers here

Is it much more simple to wire up the multifunction on its own? I have the switches but can't differentiate in the 'how to' which wiring is for the MF and which for the cruise. Do I need any additional wiring to what's already in place?

Can anyone help? Car is a facelift 04.
Which end are you asking about? Inside the steering wheel, there is a 4 wire connector and that does both the radio and cruise. At the bottom end you have to run 3 wires (using those from the cable set). 2 go over the the LCM switch (power and i-bus) and 1 goes into the engine bay for the cruise control.

Did you download the pdf file in post #10? It and the pictures should get you going.

bump. does anyone know if the steering wheel goes back on just 1 way? it looks like theres a notch to where it will only reinstall one way, I probably never realized my wheel/alignment was off a tad, the steering wheel is a bit off center.
It can definitely rotate and throw it off center (ask me how I know).

There are alignment marks something like this:

I'm about to try out this guide tonight. What is this cable for? I bought the official wiring kit, and I don't see anything similar in there.

Also, once I'm inside the DME box, do I just insert the wire into PIN27 and nothing else? The official BMW guide said to connect A6 to A8 for some reason.

Thanks!

Ming
That connects the MFL panel to the steering wheel.
If you are doing the ZCP conversion, you already have it. The one button panel uses the same connector.

...and yes, pin27 should be the only thing to hook up in the DME. Looks like A8 is only for M47TU diesel engines.

Cazz, I'm going to do the retrofit on a late 2004 325i with four spoke non MF steering wheel. I've ordered an M sport MF steering wheel and the cruise control cable set, waiting for them to come. But I'm a little confused with that small cable mentioned in the first and last posts, do I need that?
It is included as part of the steering wheel.

It is part #5:

I'm pretty sure I have the DIY from here in addition to the pdf.

Question #1-Is there just one wire set, such as the ECS kit or are there two?
I thought the little set I had pictured ran from bottom of column to wheel and there is another harness that plugs into loom below headlight and in firewall
yes?
no?
The wiring harness you posted is for connecting under the steering column.
It has wires for going to the light control model and into the engine box.
You also need the cable between the multifunction switches and the top of the steering column (if it didn't come with the wheel).

If you got the round airbag the part number for the connecting line is 61318386947
