Several people have asked me about the harness I made for my SMG steering wheel with paddle shift retrofit and I promised to make a DIY writeup. Here it is. It is pretty simple and the main benefit is to avoid wires splicing and the retrofit becomes easily reversible.

The retrofit itself is already very well described by 330ciandr6: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=826971

Moreover, I found a post about harness as well (by 320de46m47): http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=7710568&postcount=7

Not all information is completely correct in the harness post, btw (wrong list of parts). So, here is my version.

All parts are listed here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=EV53&mospid=47725&btnr=61_1280&hg=61&fg=15

You will need:
1) One large blue plug, 4 pol, p/n 61136925611 (item #5 on diagram, male)
2) Two pin-contacts, p/n 61130005198 (black) for the connector 61136925611
3) Two pin-contacts, p/n 61130006664 (black/red) for the connector 61136925611.

4) One large blue plug, 4 pol, p/n 61138380696 (item #4 on diagram, female)
5) One small blue plug, 2 pol, p/n 61136925634 (item #1 on diagram, female)
6) Three bushing contacts, p/n 61130005197 (black) for the connectors 61138380696 and 61136925634
7) Three bushing contacts, p/n 61130006663 (black/red) for the connectors 61138380696 and 61136925634.

Parts 61130006663 and 61130005197 are almost identical and you can get 6 pieces of either of them instead of 3 and 3. The only difference is in color of the wire, which I found useful and convenient. Same is for parts 61130005198 / 61130006664 - the only difference is the color and 4 pieces of either of them will work.

Also get thermal shrink wraps in nearest Home Depot, Lowes or Radioshack (I don't like the latter one because it is so overpriced!).

Now, the pics and measurements of the harness.
The total length is about 39 inches:

Here is the schema:

I didn't need any additional wires since I reused wires I cut from contacts I used in the short part of the harness (each contact comes with 1 ft wire attached to it; you need 1 inch of them for the short part of the harness). I think the pics and schema are self explanatory, but if you have questions feel free to ask.

Awesome!

The reason I never finished this DIY is because I wanted to emulate the circuit board bridge that enabled the shifters to procure a 3rd and 4th function in addition to downshift (1st function) and upshift (2nd function).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx3-OjN5yPc

Here SubzeroE46, who is a long time member here, has allowed the shift paddles to either activate the car into S mode from D mode (3rd function) or deactivate S mode back to D mode (4th function) with a simultaneous press of both paddles.

ECSTuning has everything in stock.

Here is what the parts cart would look like for this DIY:

Only thing their shipping is pricey regardless of where you ship...

I prefer to buy from www.bmwmercedesparts.com. Their shipping costs are reasonable (no crap like 'handling fee' like getbmwparts.com is charging).
yeah...i stop giving my business to Tischer because of their unreasonable shipping and handling charges

http://thebmwpartstore.com is very reasonable and gives free shipping over a certain amount. they are also a sponsor.

great DIY. i also made my own wire harness in 2005 using a CD-ROM cable so it is no nearly professional as yours. looks great. you should make a few and sell it on ebay

Prices really went up at ECS!!!!

I just went back to order these same parts and it is now $48.37 with shipping!

Before it was $26.20 with the shipping!

Big Thumbs Down to ECS for jacking up the prices of these insignificant parts that have not went up on the wholesale market. Might as well just go to the BMW Dealership and pay the same prices. At least there the prices don't jump weekly.

Service fotki.com is moving the datacenter and issued warning that some pics won't be available for some time and then they promised to restore them. I just checked and for sure those pics are not available. The ETA is Nov 16-24. Wow, this is a pretty bad business model.....

Hey Nervous question on the P/Ns?

Are you sure Pin Contact With Wire Lead 0.2 - 0.5mm² BMW P/N 61130006663 and Pin Contact With Wire Lead 0.75mm² BMW P/N 61130005197 are the same?

Does the 0.2 - 0.5mm² versus 0.75mm² sizing make a difference?

Asking because on ECSTuning BMW P/N 61130006663 is 67 cents but P/N 61130005197 is $20.10!!!

The same deal is true for BMW P/N 61130005198 at $7.35 and P/N 61130006664 at $11.19 being the same?
One of these is 0.2 - 0.5 while the other is 0.7?

Overall with the substitution of the cheaper priced P/N you are looking at going from paying $53.01 to $29.75!

See below:

Without Substitution:

With Substitution:

BTW I still can't believe how much the prices have increased on ECSTuning!!!!

Hello,
I have purchased a steering wheel with SSD paddle shifters type (not the smg paddle shifters) in order to add paddle shift functionality on my automatic E46 (steptronic auto transmission).

1. Do you know if the steering wheel with SSD paddle shifters for the E46 will work with the same wiring configuration, right button pull + left button pull - as per the SMG paddle shifters????

2. Alternatively, what modification we have to do on the wiring from the steering wheel to the steptronic transmission to have both buttons work with pull + and push - as their initial design/specs was intented.?

Thanks

Will this DIY harness allow you to activate/deactivate S mode by pulling both paddles simultaneously? Or do you manually move the gear selector to S mode and D mode?
