Has Pete disappeared or stopped making PiBus?

Anyone got one they want to sell me??
I'm around but finding it hard to keep up with demand. It's not popular enough to fully commercialise and get machine made, but just too many buyers to make amaturely. Good luck finding a used one. I have 6 half-finished boards sitting here on my desk, might finish them...

He's alive!

Understand the dilemma Pete.

Ready and waiting to pay for a PiBus 4 any time.

Thank you

Hi guys is is possible to build in a touch screen and use the pibus and the most of the cars functions? My setup for now is nav mk4 without a tv module and some bad pixels on the monitor or is besides the tv module a another solution?

This is the Holy Grail in my opinion! I'd like to do exactly the same.

My set-up is Mk4 Nav, BMW ULF, Digital TV Tuner + Bordmonitor.

Google 'E46zone Tungmeister', top return should be "OEM Nav Android Integration". There are ways to improve this set up, so you're not hacking up the headunit. His way creates two channels, OE on one and Android on the other, by switching inputs. On Android channel the headunit buttons won't do anything.

Alternatively, yes, you could swap to a touchscreen and a PiBus and retain the stock button controls. I don't know if touchscreen could be made to work as well.

I like the idea of an 'Android' channel to provide streaming music/radio and a more modern Nav (Waze?).

Challenge is touchscreens are mostly bigger than Bordmonitor screen, the smaller ones are capacitive (not resistive). But you can find them for €50 approx.

Hi,

hope Pete is still reading this sometimes.

I have a Semi-Touch solution now. Kodi and Pi are controlled via touchscreen, the oem system is controlled the original way.

But i got a problem and hope to find a solution.

I use a GONBES8200 to convert the RGBHV signal from the NAV to a VGA signal. This works pretty good and i can see the OEM system like on the oem screen on my 6.5" LCD.

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Green-Arcad...216230?hash=item3d5d69bea6:g:usgAAOSw6DtYUfM~

This converts the VGA signal to LVDS:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/7-Zoll-LCD-...861476?hash=item3d721321a4:g:3ecAAOSwp-5bh6s2

As screen I use an Innolux 6.5"

https://www.ebay.de/itm/AT065TN14-6...000376?hash=item363451a6f8:g:UoMAAOSwczlbP8LP

As touch I use a capacitive panel connected via I2C to usb

https://de.aliexpress.com/item/6-2-...02dd9b7&transAbTest=ae803_1&priceBeautifyAB=0

When i change to the Pi, screen is flickering. Didn't change anything from the usual pibus setup.

So the signal is still coming from the Pi and goes to the TV Tuner.

I guess it is just a software problem, because OEM contents are shown right.

As far as I remember there is nothing we have to setup, regarding sdtv in config.txt Pi is sending in NTSC as default, like the tv tuner does. Maybe I have to change the sdtv_aspect to make it work in the car.

Via HDMI it is working without problems.

i think you should change rasp and tv modul(by coding) signal to PAL. maybe the arcade board can not handle the different modes.

how is the brightness of the lcd screen on a very sunny day?

Already NavCoded Tv module to PAL. Still flickering screen.

The problem seems to come from sync. The gonbes uses RGB and sync from nav. As long as nav produces the picture (oem system) everything is good.

When tv module produces thw picture, sync seems to be produced from oem monitor.

The monitor only receives signal from RGB cables. There is no sync cable going to the dash.

From the oem sharp monitor schematic i found out that sync is produced in the headunit itself.

The question is now is it a RGsB signal or how is sync signal produced in the headunit.

Maybe i have to get the sync signal from the headunit to produce vga signal via gonbes.

When i use the oem monitor everything works well. So tv module is not broken.

When i enter tv mode and use the custom display, it is also flickering, but not with oem system and custom display.

the bordscreen gets RGsB Signal. And the Screen gets an ibus message for screen mode, also.

some years ago i got it working with this arcade board, but with other wiring pin connections. at weekend i can look for.

how is the brightness of the lcd screen on a very sunny day?

Thanks in advance. Would really help.

Brightness is as good as oem monitor. Had no problems so far.

Next idea is to bring oem system to the pi, to put a bigger touchscreen in the front.

I'd like to rebuild the oem look in qt. All informations are coming from the ibus, the problem is to find out all the messages.

Hi Pete

I have now the system running for 3 years and it works perfectly. I would have sold my car long ago without your board/idea. So THANKS for this great thing. The demand is for sure existing from what I see from other owners, but they fear the installation. => a shame for them. But maybe it would increase if we had DAB on plus on the board?
=> BTW for first time readers... I did long a go a howto and it can be found in this forum, you just need 6h max, but its worth every $ and even if it would cost 300$ per board it is worth the money.

I have a question respectively to be honest, a feature request
In Europe there are about to shut down FM radio and people will sooner or later need to have a DAB device in the car. My question / idea / request is now, if a DAB radio can be integrated into the system to replace the radio module of the BMW.
=> Means I would be interested to have selectable sources e.g.
CD1 = PI
CD2 = DAB radio
CD3 = Bluetooth Phone

I hope you still have your BMW, then this would be as well an add-on for you :) I fear a bit to play around with the board to test it, as it is not for sale anymore. With the programming I might be some help and I would defenively invest time to have this done. But it probably makes little sense to make it all on my own, as I want to have a professional solution ( like the one you did).
=> Do you see any possibility to execute that? I think that cou can easily request 300$ for a board that integrates the option to have different sources.

BTW, I would be highly interessted into a TV module as well, I saw its out of stock.

Thanks
Lobo

what do you mean, you will bring the oem system to the pi? the pi or other car pc needs time for booting. thats a bad solution. and it is very complex to emulate all the devices.

@lobocobra
if there is a good dab device and documentation about, it could be possible. but better to use kodi on the pi.
lot of bmw drivers switched to android headunit with ibus app.

@harryberlin

True, but it would give our old cars some new look. But you are righr. Didnt think about the bootdelay. That makes the projejct useless, even it was maybe cool, but yes, nothing looks better than oldschool. At least id like to have the new display with touch for pi running...

Meanwhile i soldered two wires to the connecter on the pcb where the original screen is connected. Pin1 is hsync pin 14 is vsync. Tried to catch the signal from there with a long wire to the trunk where the gonbes is placed. Both lines caused the same -> no signal. Maybe to much resistance with such a long wire or i missed something. On pin1 there are 0.5V at the headunit at the trunk just 0.25V, on pin14 2.5V at headunit and 2.3V at trunk. Th sync from nav outputs 2.6V

Guess i have to try the solution i found with google. LM1881 is an ic thatt is able to output hsync and vsync from G.

But still i dont know what sync from nav is for and why oem system works with it. I hope with splitter solution the oem system is still displayed and not only the pi picture.

@lobocobra

On my pi system i use OpenautoPro. To use AndroidAuto from phone. It also offers Kodi installed and you can install welle.io from github, you just need a DAB usb dongle and some knowledge about linux and compiling. I just had it on my pi working but the display project takes too much time at the moment. Anyway, it is possible.

I'd never put such an Android headunit in my car. Loosing the oem system is no option.
