I have the differential out of the car. The outside is disgusting so I want to clean it. Is it OK to turn it upside down, sideways, etc. to clean? I'm concerned there could be a vent or parts that might not do well upside down.

Yes,,ok to do that. Dont get cleaning fluid or dirt in the vent though.

Everything will be fine, clean the hole with a paper clip, and then stick a toothpick in there during cleaning to avoid dirt getting in. Might be worth changing the oil in it while it's out? 0.9-1 liter is enough.

Normally I would say: only full up the diff with the diff in the car, so you can't overfill. But I do know for a fact these hold exactly 1 liter.

Thanks all. Where exactly is the vent hole? I don't see it on real OEM and haven't found it yet. So far I've just scraped and scrubbed with some kerosene. It's looking a lot better. It's got fresh oil in it so I don't plan to replace it unless I somehow contaminate it. Do you think it is odd that all the flanges, including the input, were so clean compared to the differential, or is that normal because they move?

I think it was dirty because the car was treated with something from rust or something like that ...

The fluid capacity will probably vary with different gear ratios. Because the gears will be different sizes, and will take up different amounts of space inside the differential.

As for why the diff casing was grungy but the flanges were clean... it may have been leaking from the seals. The flanges have dust shields, to protect the seals. Those dust shields will also prevent the oil from getting out onto the input/output flanges. If that's the case, then it means your diff is leaking oil. You might want to keep an eye out for that.

...and no, the absolute worst you can do by rotating the diff around is to get it to leak a bit from the vent Igor circled.

Otherwise, it doesn't matter. It's an absolute gear oil storm in there at speed, anyhow.

In the very much FWIW category, be just a little careful with diffs removed from the car.
It's not too hard (since it's so heavy) to knock the input flange hard enough to bend an ear.
Or if you hit it harder, or drop it at all, compress the crush sleeve enough to loosen it.
You'll ONLY do it by dropping it- or letting it ride loose in a truck bed, and having it slide
forward and clobber the cab end when you have to brake hard because people, in groups, or cars, are idiots.
Yup, that's how I learned not to do that...

i personally would not advise using harsh chemicals to clean like kerosene. it may get on the seals and degrade them. it may also soak into the diff cover gasket (paper on early originals) and eat it up causing leaking.
