What kind of Diagnostic software and tools can I use (or download) so that I can read the trouble codes, reset the errors and do some programming of features? What is INPA software and how do I get it? What OBD tool do you recommend? Thank you for any tips, I am a newbie.

One tool will not do everything.

You want OBDFusion and BMW Scanner 1.4.0 at a minimum.

BMW Scanner 1.4.0 is around $30 on Amazon. DO NOT use the software that comes with the interface cable, search here and a few folks have a link for the software and there is a HUGE thread on installing the software. You often need to also open the interface and jumper pin #7 & #8.

If you have a smart phone or tablet, get an OBDII App and interface so you can read the codes along with Live/Realtime or Freeze Frame data then you will know exactly what is going on with the engine fuel management system.

The OBDFusion App and proper VeePeak interface from Amazon are less than $40 for both for iProducts, less than $20 for both for Android.

OBDFusion for Android is is $3.99.

OBDFusion, for the iProducts it is $9.99.

For iProducts you NEED a LE Bluetooth adapter which are more expensive. VeePeak now offers a LE Bluetooth interface that is compatible with OBDFusion.

Suggest you also read the PDF in this thread for more details about how to capture and share the data - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1097893 This info is Android specific, iProducts is similar, menu options may be different.

As jfoj said, you want obdfusion for the check engine light. You use inpa/BMW scanner for issues other than engine ones. Those will handle airbag errors, traction control errors, etc.

I have ordered BMW V1.4.0 Scanner Diagnostic Interface Code Reader Scan Tool E38 E39 E46 from ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-BMW-V1...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I guess I will use the tool, but do not use the software that comes with it.

Are you saying that i will have to jumper the pins #7 and 8 if I use different software?

I have ScanTool 427201 OBDLink LX Bluetooth: Professional OBD-II Scan Tool for Android & Windows https://www.amazon.com/ScanTool-427...sional+OBD-II+Scan+Tool+for+Android+&+Windows . I got this OBD tool for Chevy Volt, I wonder if this tool would work with BMW?

Try it first as it comes out of the box. I did not need to jump any pins and mine worked perfectly. Used it to eliminate 37 degree warning beep, program my rear windows for one-touch close (after modifying the switch to allow it to go to the second detent), and all window/sunroof close with remote. Good luck.

The OBDLink App that is free for use with the OBDLink interfaces is an OE version of OBDFusion, but called OBDLink. So you really do not need anything else. So you do not need to by OBDFusion, you already have it.

Forget about Torque, it has bugs and the Logs are loaded with extraneous crap that needs to be edited.
