The only thing I can think of is that CSLs came with semi-slick tires, and all buyers had to sign a disclaimer when buying the car.

Although I'm not sure if the wheel would have come with tires attached

Someone with more knowledge than me can chime in but since no one has responded... I believe the the wheels off the CSL are slightly wider than standard in the front (half inch). Now the competition wheels should be the same as standard and plug and play.

There are a lot of people that Run OE CSL's on regular m3's. From my long history of M3 observation, there has not been any stories deeming them unsafe.
I think the consideration is while you can run them if they are .5 wider in the front do you need spacers and is that why he’s being told the part won’t fit. It technically requires modification?

been running genuine bmw CSLs wheels front back for about a decade. no fitment issues,
amd no spacers needed.

genuine fronts are NLA.

surprisingly even with fairly wide tires and lowered they clear.
