Don't insert the shorter end as the longer end will hit the block during a turn. So insert the long end in the hole (you know which hole) and turn (you might need to work at the gym for strong fingers). I used a small extension tube on the short end to turn.
Haha I'll start doing the finger push ups now. That extension tube is a good idea, anything for more torque. Thanks for the suggestion

Check the bit on the cam sensors for fitment. Same 5mm bolts.
Well I installed the crankshaft and it sounded a lot better. No check engine light. Tried to go for a test drive. Got 10 feet, car died. On INPA I'm only getting one misfire (instead of multiple) on cylinders 2 3 4 5, so it's getting somewhere. The exhaust camshaft sensor is the only camshaft/crankshaft sensor I haven't replaced yet (because mine is stuck on there), could this be causing these issues? I feel like I'm on the right track but not sure

After adding oil to the cylinders, it smoked out the exhaust a bit, but it started up! I'm thinking maybe the piston rings aren't moving as freely as they should? Sparks are coming through as well.

Thank you for your responses by the way, huge help and huge $$$ saver.
Thanks for the thread and detailed updates throughout, to be honest I only signed up to say thank you cause my clubsport just had the exact same symptoms after doing the CCV.

Needless to say even though I've had over a dozen of these so far... First time I've managed to swap the plugs and given how they are unique to were they go, it was a stupid oversight on my part.

Car started straight away after swapping out the fuse but I've still got to put it all back together.

Awesome! Good to hear! Shit happens, but glad you overcame the shit.

Current update: I believe my oil leak is causing the misfire (something to do with crankcase pressure? Been about a month since I read about it). I haven't fixed it yet since there's been a lot of rain.

I changed the OFHG since I figured it was leaking, and it was. No more oil leak.

Still looking for this damn vacuum leak. I've smoked tested it a bunch of times, cleared up every leak I've found, gotten under the car and looked up while smoke testing to see if I missed anything, can't find anything now. I'm guessing something may not be bolted down completely or completely snug? Because it tends to misfire when it drops down in RPM, after I rev it past 2k. Not sure if the vibration of the engine is what shakes it loose? Cylinders 2 3 4 5 all misfire at exactly the same time, on RPM's around 700-850. Idle is pretty rough. I've checked the hoses on the SAP and have replaced both since I got the car, so I don't think it's that (since the smoke test can't get to it). DISA o-ring is new. Crankshaft and camshaft sensors are BMW genuine, and have new o rings. I've checked intake boots, replaced them, replaced the F connector, replaced the ring connecting both intake boots, ensured all ports on the back of the intake are capped or have new lines, CCV isn't leaking smoke during smoke test...

At least I've fixed/replaced most of the necessary stuff, even if it didn't fix the vacuum leak.

Holy shit I feel like there's some actual progress. It doesn't appear to be good news though. I added some 5 gallons of fresh premium gas to the engine since it's been a few months and it was starting to get low.
I tried to start the car and rev the engine and after some time, it blew out some small hardened oil chunks (I think), anddddd this. I'm hoping I don't have to replace the cats. Living in California with carb is gonna cost me an arm and a leg. As always, appreciate insights.

Trying to smoke test the tail pipes to see if there's an exhaust leak, but the rear of the tail pipe (like 6 inches in) has openings on the side that allow the smoke to escape. Any good ideas for how to seal these up? Or an idea on finding an exhaust leak? I tried turning the car on and spraying soapy water all over the cats and headers, couldn't find any obvious leaks.

Small update. Noticed on the carfax report from when I got the car that they only changed 1 oxygen sensor, bank 2 sensor 1 (or upstream/before cat sensor). I ordered a wifi OBD scan tool, a boroscope, and an oxygen sensor socket. I'm going to cold read the oxygen sensors using OBDFusion (to have graphs), and then read them when they're hot. See if the two banks mesh up, before and after the cat. I'm also going to take out the pre-cat sensors and stick the boroscope in there to see if it's potentially a clogged cat. If I can't tell, I'll order an exhaust pressure tester and test it on an oxygen sensor port. I do feel quite a lot of pressure coming out of one of the tail pipes, and considering a chunk of the cat came out of one of them, I'm hoping the whole cat isn't melted or causing back pressure. Living in California would kill my wallet for the cat(s).

So far I don't believe I have any vacuum leaks, just potentially a clogged cat/exhaust (or two), or an exhaust leak.

Alright I feel dumb as a doorknob. I was searching online and found a thread of someone else whose car wasn't sparking cylinder 2. I checked my plugs and 1 and 6 are dirty as hell, 2 through 5 look clean as a whistle. The guys solution was changing the DME. I had already checked the DME in September, but dumb me didn't actually flip the board over to the extremely obvious reason why I've been having misfires. I ordered a new DME off eBay (junkyard legit only had ms 45.1 and ms 42), and once that comes in I'll clone my DME to the new one, and see if she works.

Is that your DME? Just solder the transistors on, (I'd test them prior using a decent tester).
Yeah it is. I ordered a DME off ebay for $35. I don't have a solder setup, but that would be handy for times like these. For $35 though I don't mind just cloning it and being done with it.

Thinking on it, I'll clone it, then try to fix the old one. If it's fixed, then I'll use it for tuning and learning that.

FINAL UPDATE: IT RUNS. IT DRIVES!

This thread was helpful: E46 Cylinder 2 Misfire

I replaced the DME, deleted EWS, and everything works as it should. Thing is a fucking beast after all the stuff I did, thinking I had found the problem. I am ecstatic. 6.5 months of not driving, now I'm finally back in my e46. I'm a supremely happy camper! I can't believe I'm finally ending this thread haha

Thanks for all the help, people of this thread! I hope this thread helps others in the future when troubleshooting similar issues.
