They aren't neccesarily illegal but I dont know what the laws are down there in cali

It helps because you can hear smokey talking to each other because no matter how fast you are going you cant outrun a radio

I cant find the links I was looking at but there is some neat stuff out there. Like scanners that pickup the repeaters that the cops use...In some areas cops cary they hand radio with a repeater on their car .... What happens is that when any cop in the state uses their radio is repeats on all the cars.... some scanner have a function to alert you to a this. So you will know if a cop is in area that wouldnt have been picked up by a radar/laser detector if they arent using them. I am going to do stealth install of a hand unit and doing some research a a badass stealth antenna so I will be better prepared for drives thissummer... hope this help...i couldnt find the links i wanted to forward to you

i have one a lot of my friends have the uiden i think the brand is called when they street race and we have the local police station channel back at home so we can find out when they get a call....you can buy them cheap of qvc check out their website www.qvc.com

nope its a normal kind you just gotta know the police's number...you can easily get that...they sell the books on ham radios with diffrent numbers

I think this is what you are looking for. Uniden BCT 12 Beartracker
It comes pre-programmed with each states police radio frequencies. It also has a visual alert, so that if a police radio is in use within like 3 miles of you, it will signal.

There is also a BCT 10, which acts the same way, but the BCT 12 is supposed to pick up a cops mobile radio, that they use when they are away from their car.

how is it a federal offenese?? the way i figure it is that if they sell it at electronic stores, then it cant be illegal

it is probably sold for another reason.....it's just what I heard

they also sell headers, and nitrous, and those are illegal

i have a cheap scanner but it works...although it doesnt work while you are driving but i dont know if these others work while driving

i need one.

CHP officers don't use HAM radios, though some carry seperate (officer owned) HAM radios for talking to people and listening to truckers. Also, law enforcement generally uses laser light, and radar detectors don't detect that. Make sure that you don't carry radar jammers, because I've been on ride alongs w/ CHP officers, and some have the electronics capable of detecting jammers, and that is against the law. Scanners are not illegal! However, if a scanner is used in conjunction w/ committing a crime, then you're S.O.L.!!

A scanner used with a high quality radar detector is essential for police radar countermeasures.
I have a Uniden BearTracker 800 (BCT7). It has the warning light and beeper for the radio repeater as mentioned above. I'm cruising at 80 - 90 mph on my way to Florida and that bad boy warned with at least a 3 mile heads up. The alarm goes off and sure enough there was ole smokey up ahead about a few miles on the opposite side of the highway.
Down side, it also alarms if the cop is within 3 miles of the highway without being on the highway. :sad:

Listening to the radio chatter also gives you a heads up on traffic accidents and backups. The state channels are pre-programmed in and you can get a list of almost every channel used for the local constables as well. You'll have to manually enter those. Also has fire and news.

Add a CB and you have it all.

Only problem is where to put the darned thing.

Do a google search. Scanners are illegal in DC and some states. CA was not one of them.

i have a cheap scanner but it works...although it doesnt work while you are driving but i dont know if these others work while driving
