Bmw Coolant

Hey guys im new to e46s and i understand one of the first things to do is replace your old cooling system . But does the coolant really have to be the bmw coolant or can it be a regular one that is compatible with all year, all vehicle types ? Thanks in advance!

The BMW coolant is just as easy to get as anything else. Unless you're just being cheap. If you have to pinch pennies, owning a BMW is poor judgement. Just get the correct coolant.

While at the dealer, see if you can get yourself an empty coolant bottle with cap -- it makes mixing much easier.

A single gallon of BMW coolant is all you need. Mix it with DISTILLED WATER at a 50/50 ratio. The cooling system holds a little less than 2 gallons of coolant. As you're in SoCal, you can top it off with distilled water.

My point is while you are there get two so you can have extra mix on hand if you ever need it.

+1 bleeding the system spills coolant. 2 gallons is a safe bet.

OE BMW, Xerex G-05 and OE Mercedes coolant are all acceptable options. If for whatever reason you have the latter 2 lying around, they are safe to use. However, if you are buying coolant anyway, there really is no reason to deviate from OE BMW on this one.

Pep Boys carries Zerex. Zerex G-05 is the equivalent to the blue BMW Coolant. The blue coolant is actually made by Zerex pretty sure its the same stuff. Just not gonna be as pretty when your radiator leaks.

This is why people shouldn't just regurgitate information without knowing what they're talking about for sure.

It seems that Zerex G 48 IS BMW approved,
and Zerex G 05 IS NOT BMW approved.

Zerex G-05 (Glysantin G-05) is very similar--though not the same--to BMW OE coolant (Glysantin G-48) and I really wouldn't hesitate to use it. Volvo blue and Mercedes blue are the same as BMW blue. You can also use Pentosin NF, which is also basically the same thing, but more expensive. All G-?? coolants are made by (or specified formulas from) Glysantin/BASF.

Japanese blue coolant, on the other hand, is completely different.

But iwas wondering do either or both of them have to be mixed with water or are either of them ready to go as is ??? Ps i am not using both together, just wondering for next time ,Please help, thanks !

The BMW coolant must be diluted 50/50. Unless the bottle says 50/50 prediluted on it, it's not. And don't put that Zerex crap in your E46.

I was under the impression Xerex G-05 is OEM or damn close to it.
