Generally no. It can be and usually is something smal but I'd NEVER take that chance with my car. Definately time to call the dealer ASAP. If you call BMW Roadsite assistance they'll tow u to the dealer free of charge(I'm assuming u're still under warranty).

Already read manual, already search, already read faq. They don't give much info. The faq only tells me to tighten gas cap, the manual also tells me to do so.

Is the car acting strange in any way? Did you make any mods recently (CAI or something). If u're under warranty and the dealer isn't a hike u might as well send it in.

I am gonna bring it to the dealer, but the question is whether I drive it there or must it be towed. The car is operating smoothly. It came on last night WHILE I was driving. No mods recently.

Call the dealer and see what they think and make sure u get the name of whoever makes the suggestion because then it's their ass. Towing costs u nothing so it's no biggy if u go that route.

bro my car did it too, the dealer said nothing to wurry about, just drive it around the block a couple of times and when you go home after that you will see when you turn on the car the light will be off

Another option is you can buy the Peake Research tool for your car and it will tell you what is wrong and if it is nothing you can reset the Check Engine light...149.00
