my friend is wanting to purchase a e39 1997 540...

he doenst like the old tail lamps and wants to change it to the later e39 ones..

are those interchangable? like an easy retrofit?

It's a pretty easy retrofit, but it does involve drilling some 5/8" holes behind the tailights. I did it to my 2000 E39 528.

The tail light kit costs about $350; www.bekkers.com or www.bavauto.com are good places to buy them.

Upgrading the front lights to the 2001+ OEM angel eyes is a simple retrofit. Plug and play. But costs $1000 or $1500 depending on if you have/want xenon headlights.
