Catalytic converter replacement options?

What options exist for replacing the catalytic converters/exhaust manifolds? I have catalytic efficiency below threshold in both banks. BMW replacements are at least $800 per manifold which is more than the car is worth, a 2003 330xi with 260,000 miles. I called a junkyard recently looking for used manifolds and he told me he wasn't allow to sell used catalytic converters. Are there any other good options besides buying the BMW manifolds?

My money is on the sensors, not the CATs.

Not sure where you are located.

If in the US, does your state test for emissions on cars 15 yrs or older?

In my state, MA..They don't....so - in theory - you could flash the EU2 tune and turn off your post-cat O2 sensors, and SAP, the former will no longer record CAT efficiency. You will also lose your check engine light, although error codes are still recorded to be captured with a scanner.

The alternative is to:
1. buy OEM
2 remove your exhaust manifold and have a muffler shop weld in new, good quality cats
3. Buy cheaper Ebay or Amazon cats of unknown quality
4. Buy a parts car, keep the cats and sell the rest
5. find somebody parting a car with Cats
