Car jumped time, running retarded

I backed my 02 330xi up a small hill and pushed in the clutch to roll forward out of the driveway. I started rolling about 5MPH and was in the middle of a conversation. Forgetting to put the car in first I slowly let out the clutch and the car obviously came to a stop. Car cranked for a while on restart and SES light came on. Code is "Crankshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction P0335" Car has almost no power and cranks for a long time before it starts. I'm guessing the engine rotated backwards, defeated the chain tensioner and the timing became retarded. Any other theories on this? any write ups on how to set cam timing?

Thanks.

That sounds like a logical conclusion. If it is the case, not the easiest job to fix. I would take the a look at the cams to see if they still line up and you may want to change out the timing chain while you're in there.
OK, I did a bunch of searching and found threads with similar symptoms and codes. Seems most of them were related to crazy computer readings and in most cases a code reset combined with a loose conector repair worked. I haven't seen any threads where replacing the crank sensor fixed the problem. One guy popped started his car and it caused the problem, another was on ice sliding and hit a dry patch. In my case the stop was not abrupt, I didn't hear any "bad" noises. It actually took me a minute to realize the car wasn't running. I reset the code with a cheap reader, I've got a friend looking at it now who has a professional analyser, we'll see what happens. Hopefully I can just pop off the valve cover and reset the cam timing?
Your cam position sensor went toast. Trust me, you will not skip your chain tensioner :).
Now the computer does not know what position your cam is in, so it sets the timing to full retard.
Don't get too paranoid and make it bigger than it is.

^ +1 If your chain skipped a tooth there's a good chance the engine wouldn't run at all and there would probably be alot more damage.
What about disconnecting the battery for a minute or so to try to reset the ECU?? A simple thing to try, you never know.....

I don't understand how the engine rotating backwards could damage a sensor. You think it's the cam senor or crank sensor? ?

Tried that, no go.
with the more advanced scan tool I also see a exhaust cam sensor code. I ordered the exhaust cam position sensor. $60, I'll have it Monday, we'll see what happens.

$60, that doesn't sound like an OEM one?! Use only OEM for cam sensors.

what's wrong with aftermarket? I'm not interested in dumping a ton of money into this thing, I just want to get it running decent for the winter. I'll probably replace it with something newer in the spring.

your on a bmw forum thats why its always right to use genuine bmw parts ;)

not that anything else i have found ever to be not as good with other cars and bikes using aftermarket parts

most of the parts are produced in the same factory on a different line and come with a different name on it and with vauxhall (gm) aftermarket parts even came in the same GM bag with it on it so im thinking if ya just want to get it running buy aftermarket :woot:
Most sensors will only work if they're OEM on this car (look at all the people who buy aftermarket MAFs, i've only heard of one person having it work and the rest of them are SOL. I know a CPS is different to a MAF but there is method on our madness). Others have a 50/50 chance. OEM spec or made to OEM quality are 100% not enough. Now if it doesn't work you have no way of knowing if there is another problem or if the sensor doesn't work.
OEM sensors are a must with BMW, I bought a cam shaft sensor (aftermarket) just to find I had to buy another (OEM) to get the car working....No exchanges with sensors:censor:
generic $60 cam position sensor did the trick, I'm back up and running :)
glad to here you fixed the problem.......
Didnt want to start a whole new thread so thought i'd just ask here. Today temp was down to about 0 deg C and i had to do a U turn in a big empty car park so i thought why not switch the DSC off and slide it a little :tsk: Well the car spun 180 degrees and the engine stalled, yeh i know my fault i should put the cluthch in, or even better not bothered to switch of the DSC!! So i start it back up and the Warning triangle light is on.

To cut a long story i too have the P0335 Powertrain: CKP Sensor A Circuit Performance fault code. Tried resetting it with my scan tool but no luck. Have i fried my sensor?? Its seems strange that a slide and stall would cause that.

The car seems to drive ok, just an extra turn or 2 before it starts up.
:bump:............ seeing as the car is running ok i was thinking of removing the camshaft position inlet/intake perhaps giving it a clean and just sticking it back in and see if that would help reset things.... :dunno:
The sensor is probably good, but the computer doesn't know WTF happened when everything got spun backward for a second.
Is the 3.0L motor interference? (ie: piston/valve contact if timing is out of sync)
