OK, I'm having some trouble with my 99 328i. The keyless quit working some time ago and the dealer installed a new battery in it but it won't unnlock the car. The little red light goes on when you hit the button though. The problem is that the actual key lock won't work now!

Now when you try the key lock it will spin but nothing happens. It feels like there is no resistance. Car is still locked.

I've read several posts about the keyless. What should I do here? I would like to try replacing the battery. Autozone says they can do it but should I use the dealer? In case none of this works what should I do, bust a window, call AAA? Thanks

You need to re associate your key with your car. Either look in your manual or search.

do your other doors power locks still work?

Do you have fold down seats? Crawl in...

Can you put the windows down by holding the unlock button?

No fold down seat? Maybe you'd like a nice ski pass?

Read up on it. Basically you're kicking in a lightly welded piece of metal in the spot where your rear armrest fits.

I could wiggle through mine, but I'm used to that from my spelunking days...not sure about you. Are you large?

If so, no worries...walk to local 7/11 buy candy and lure small kids to crawl through your trunk and use the door handle...maybe pulling it twice. Maybe with the key they can unlock door and hopefully not accidentally start the car and drive away.

Lets see-I checked the battery. Its reads 3.25 volts on my digital meter. The dealer said they sell a 3v Panasonic cr2016 battery for this key. He also said that they can recode the key.

At the moment, the key is useless . None of the buttons do anything on it including the window roll down. I can open the trunk but the rear seat doesn't fold down. There is a piece of metal behind the rear seat. Is this what you would kick in?

I'll try getting the dealer to recode the key before I start breaking stuff!

Sounds like possibly the GM5 unit might be bad. Does the car do ANYTHING when you use your key fob?

Try holding down the unlock, the windows and sunroof should run down/open if the key is sending a signal at all.

You can reprogram your GM5 to work with your key without taking it to the dealer.

1) Get into vehicle, close door, switch ignition ON and OFF again, remove ignition key.

2) Press and hold the unlock button, while doing this briefly press lock button 3 times within 10 seconds, release unlock button. On some models the LED on the key will flash slowly for around 10 seconds, other models the central locking will lock and unlock rapidly to indicate correct procedure. Some models you may need to try this more than once and up to 4 keys can be programmed but no more.

Note: Programming needs to be carried out for each individual key within 30 seconds.

This will re-train your fob to the GM5. If you have tried a few times with no success disconnect your battery, remove plugs from GM5, wait 5 mins, plug in all GM5 connections (make sure they are seated properly), re-connect car battery, try the above mentioned steps again.

Best of luck.

OK I stopped by the dealer today to ask what they could do to help me out. Not much was the answer.

He said the way they would reprogram the key requires the car! He also said that the slim Jim method wouldn't work on BMW's because they are double locked, whatever that means. I asked how they would get into the car. He said that they would probably get in by disabling the lock cylinder, which I never heard of. This would be good because I probably need a new one.

Any ideas? I have to take apart the door anyway to see what's up with the lock so If I broke out this window it wouldn't be such a huge deal. There are windows on ebay for as little as $50.

The dealer is probably talking about drilling out your broken lock cylinder and then use a screwdriver to mechanically unlock the car through to hole. Slim jim won't work on our cars.

Its been warmer lately but sometimes my locks would freeze and when i stick the key in and twist really hard it would spin in circles until it unfroze, then it worked fine. I had to throw hot water on the damn key-hole.

that actually happened on my 325i, the same thing thats happening to you now, keyhole didn't work, gm5 was being a douche. Called the dealer, they couldn't give me a straight answer...I was like wtf...called a locksmith...he couldn't get in...so I ended up breaking the rear smaller window...not the automated one..just the smaller glass...last resort  and just got the glass replaced. My gm5 is still messed up but i got my keyhole fixed so I just use that..I don't even bother with the fob anymore

I noticed that this winter too that these cars have extremely weak locking mechanisms. The car wouldn't be able to unlock or lock itself after sitting in <10 degree parking lots overnight. Also, the power windows would freeze shut on me too.

thanks for your reply. I think that I'm going this route. I might bust the driver's door window because I'm going to have to pull that door apart anyhow. There are windows on ebay for $50 to $80.

There is a thread on <a href="http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=355132">another site</a> where the guy with this exact problem had the door cylinder pulled. Apparently a guy in Turkey sells a bmw rebuild kit for the cylinder which is the problem (at least for the door cylinder and door locking function). The gm5 is another story.

I had my battery changed a while ago and the dealer said you have to reprogram the key after this.

While its likely that the cylinder is messed up, I'm wondering if the thing that is the backing part of the cylinder fell off or is disconnected. There is something that looks like a screwdriver extending concentrically back from the cylinder. This goes into the mechanism that can move the other part that lock/unlock the door.

Hi
I face the same problem with my 1999/BMW320D in Roma around 1 week ago, key remote function is out of service and the only one door lock was already broken by some theif. Fortunately my car was locked in the garage, now I am looking for the way to open the door without costing too much around Roma... maybe the only way is to break the small window...

OK I still haven't resolved this problem but I've decided to break into the small window on the back door. My car is parked securely off street and I have another ride so it hasn't been a big issue.

My question, where, other than the dealer, do I buy a replacement for the window? There are plenty of aftermarket windows on ebay, but none of the little ones for the rear door.
