This thread is intended to contain all information and links for BMW Scanner 1.4.

BMW Scanner 1.4 runs on Windows, and provides the ability to read/clear trouble codes, view live data, code settings, and test functionionality on most control modules found on BMW models produced from 1992 to 2006.

PA Soft is the european company, now defunct, that created the software and original cable. PA Soft sold the cable for several hundred dollars via their bmw-scanner.com website; you paid for the cable but downloaded the software for free. Later, the cable began to be cloned and sold for less than $100. At that point, PA Soft gave up selling it. Today we buy these cheap Chinese cables for around $20 and download the software for free.

Although the BMW Scanner 1.4 application runs on Windows XP through 11, it is difficult to install and configure the drivers on Windows 10/11, so Windows 7 is recommended. Original thread on installing
  1. Download the software to your PC
  2. Extract the zip file to a folder, note the EXE program file
  3. Connect the cable to the car’s OBD port and the PC (cable requires power from the car’s OBD port)
  4. Key does not have to be in the ignition switch
  5. Allow Windows to detect the cable and install the drivers
  6. If Windows failed to install the drivers, download them from ftdichip.com and install
  7. Insert key into ignition switch and turn to position 2 (run) or just start the engine
  8. Run the BMW Scanner 1.4 program
