hi Guys

need some help pls
have recently bought a BMW 318 auto saloon 2002 (facelift model)
the problem i have is that, every 300 miles i have to refil the oil AND
when the engine is on and the car is not moving for more than 3/4 minutes(e.g stuck in traffic) , white smoke comes out for a few minutes until i start driving again and then stops.
have read loads of forums, re: headgasket etc.... however no fudgy oily signs and no issues with water discolouration and expansion tank.
I have taken the car to two BMW specialists and they say its the Head-Gasket.
I now the simple answer to this is for everyone to say .."yeah its the headgasket", but can anyone actually explain why the white, cloudy smoke only comes out whilst the car is standing and not moving.
the car drives perefectly otherwise.

when the car is at a standstill it might be dripping oil onto the hot engine/exhaust and burning, hence the smoke. It's happening when youre moving however the smoke gets displaced by the wind/air movement. I hope you get what I mean. Does it smell when you see the smoke ? It could be valve cover gasket ? Open the hood and check all the way around if its dripping oil. Im sure you will be able to spot where the smoke is originating. good luck!

Well it's NOT going to be the oil filter housing or the associated gasket. If those were faulty you would have a pool of oil on your garage floor. If you don't have a garage or you don't park in the same place all the time (i.e. street parking) then you need to fill it, run it, park it, then take notice below the car. If you find fresh oil drops, then you should check these items. There are DIY's for it.

I hope you get it worked out.

Almost sounds like it could be the valve cover gasket - much cheaper! Is your white smoke sweet smelling? If so, coolant is leaking and it's not the VGC. Otherwise maybe oil is finding it's way into the exhaust manifold and burning and you only see it at idle?

Are you a real babe or just a guy ? We need pics if the former. Before you start following people's random suggestions, let's get the basic facts straight first. Where is this white smoke coming from ? Is it from the tail pipe or somewhere else ?

Welp the "babe" never came back but this is the first post I found with "oil burning" in the title and I'm having the same problem.

I'm burning oil. There's no visible leaks, nothing on the ground and 1 out of every 5 or so starts I'll get white smoke/steam from the exhaust for about 10 seconds regardless of the temperature of the car or the temp outside.

Cursory check of the CCV and there's no real vacuum when I remove the oil fill cap. I didn't do the dip stick check yet.

The car idles roughly when stopped in gear but not in neutral and it's not that horrible. Otherwise it runs great.

It did throw code P0365 and have the replacement Camshaft Position Sensor B but haven't installed it yet.

I also don't have any mayo, fudgy oily signs and no issues with water discoloration and expansion tank.

Thoughts?
