Hey- I just had to share this, as there is some bad info going around here! The stock upgrade stereo (not HK) does NOT come with 5 1/4 drivers in the doors- these are 6 1/2 drivers- I just took my door panels apart. I've seen aloto f guys (like myself) askign lately about the construction of the system and what is included. Anway, here you go- they are 6 1/2 drivers in the front door panels. ALSO- stock mb quart 6 1/2 reference/premuim/q speakers will not screw into the factory locations- the diameter o the quarts mounting ring is SMALLER if you can beileve that. the speakers quart makes were designed as lo profile as possible, however in this case, its ironically too small for the stock BMW locations. nothing a few fasteners can't help.

FIgured Id share this before people start buying the wrong things- you can fit a 6 1/2 ni the door without any fuss. go have fun

coupé s have more dept then sedans. To mount 6.5 in sedans you will have to mount the speakers messh grills on the door on the outside

Install for Woofers

Woof Install - Again, It's quite convenient that the 6 1/2s fit stock (coupe anyway) Here's a few things I did that made it erally easy:

1) Obtain Vantico Structural Epoxy (thick grey heavy ****- two part, black and white) it is graded to act as a structural compound on aircraft- it is very good. I epoxied 2 pieces of 3/4 MDF (1" squares) for 2 of the 3 mounting locations. The stock speakers are mounted with a torx tip screw threaded into brass inserts (x3). I wasn't thrilled about this, because you need to use a sheet metal tab, bent into a "z" in order to fasten the driver to the door. I used only 1 of the "z"s to do this- the other 2 screws were wood screws mounted into the MDF squares. The driver is nice and secure.

2) BMW includes a nice detachable trim ring to help seal the woof- the rubber surround (flat spot) pushes against the trim ring to insure a nice seal. This is a cool touch.

4) Door panel removal is EASY EASY EASY - thanks to the excellent EXCELLENT DIY page on this site. Excellent walk through.

5) Last note, If you do mount MB Quart mid-basses, you'll want to cut the harness off of the stock woofer door wiring (it has its own seperate small harness) you can use crimp-one connectors for the woofer- you'll also be able to use the crimp-ons to attach the stock woofer, instead of a harness, you can use the two connectors and they'll work fine on the pins on the stock woofer- just a good thing to know.

The entire passenger door isntall took about an hour- including removing door panel, bringin ti upstairs, figuring the best way to mount woof, crimping wiring, mountnig woof and tweet, wiring at the car and reinstalling door panel. It doesn't get much easier than this- kudos to BMW for making a car so system-friendly. Kudos to E46 fanatics for that greAt DIY walk through

the mid/bass drivers are 160mm. i believe that's what's listed on the back of my speakers.
