I'm trying to decide between going with 17s or 18s on my wagon. I'd like to have a good combination of a fairly aggressive square setup that's still comfortable, without having to roll the fenders.

My touring is sitting on stock,
non-sport package suspension.

Also looking for this, but I have sport suspension.

To answer some questions above.

On stock suspension and sport suspension you can get away with the concave 17 or 18 without any fender rolling. Once you lower the rear will have to be rolled.

If looking for aggressive yet comfortable go with 17x9 ET30. You can run a beefy 245/40 or 255/40 to help fill up the wheel well. 17" tires are also much much cheaper than 18. Plus going with 17" you get a nice OEM+ Look IMO.

Here is my 245/40 Firestone Fire Hawk Indy 500 (AKA Bridgestone Potenza RE003) with 17x9 ET30 on stock sport suspension (before lowering) and stock alignment settings.

Hard to tell with the shadows but still stock sport suspension and pleeenty of room.

With H&R Cup Kit. Rear fenders rolled.

Shaved a good amount of rear fender lip to fit
No fender mods to the front

Here's a simple shot of mine for the moment:

Has anyone needed to run spacers for a 17x8.5 ET40 set? I have KW made coilovers (think ST suspensions and the like), and have needed to run a 3mm spacer (might have to go to a 5mm) to clear the spring perch/shock. My car is not particularly low, but my tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in 235/45/17 square) have very little clearance with the struts in the front. With no spacer, I could fit 1 credit card in, and with a 3mm, I can fit 3, possibly 4. Any ideas?

Yes. I have the ST Suspension coilovers and I run a small spacer up front to clear the spring/perch. Here are my 2 setups:

18x8.5 et35 with a 225-40-18 tire (wheel lip is closest point)
17x8.5 et35 with a 245-40-17 tire (tire is closest point)

Both combos are within 1-2mm of the spring. You'll need around a 5mm spacer with your et40 wheels.

My fronts with the 3mm spacers clear with 2.5mm. My rears are fine, as I assume yours are too. I am running 235/45/17, so I think that would explain why I can get away with a 3mm instead of the 5mm with your 245s.

Confirmed with APEX that they gave me incorrect advice from the get go, so that's all good. I think if I was running a 245 square setup, I would need the 5mm for sure, as my 17 setup is the same clearance as yours with the tyre being the closest to the spring.

Finally got my matte bronze Apex wheels on!
18x9.5 et35 with a 255/35/18 tire square setup, think I'll add a 10-15mm spacer on the rear but loving the look!

Yeah I see that now that they're on... Maybe next time, I don't mind too much at the moment since I drive 250 miles a day to and from work so cheap replacements are helpful... I was worried about fitment so I played it safe I do see now I could have fit much more tire

Seems a bit odd to me that you had to shave fender to fit a 225 while MBCO is running 245's with a roll and no issues. He also has H&R cups which are supposed to be lower than the Eibach pro kit, right?

Are the touring fenders more narrow?
