Basic business 101...
First find sponsors and partners... it would help if you knew some very wealthy people that would take stock in your dealership.
After you have established a money well... or tree address the issue of receiving BMW's from well... BMW. Call them up and see what you need to be able to receive a portion of BMWs.
When you have the facility built, the cars scheduled to be shipped, you have to worry about Personel. Ohh and look to the government for funding... they give out money to people who wish to start their own businesses.

Raising money is not a problem at this point, what I need to find out is how to get a BMW allocation of vehicles and how to set up a parts and service dept.

We want to set up an entire dealer. Do we usually go about building first the showroom then the parts/service dept. or do we have to do it all at the same time?

like if i want to sell about 500 - 1000 cars a year, is BMW going to require me to have a service department withing the first year of operation??

Do I just call BMW and ask that I be sent a allocation do I have to do anything else? esp to set up a dealership with parts and service dont I have to set up a network of some sorts?

I think there is quite a bid involved to start your own BMW dealership. The reputation of BMW rides on its dealerships. With that said, they are not going to give dealerships to just anyone with money...I mean what if they cannot provide excellent customer service or are unknowledagable about BMW cars? They can damage the company's image and reputation. You will most likely have to hire a consultant to do this. You will have to hire BMW certified master technicians to head your service department. Your sales reps would probably have to go through a course to make them knowledgable about the cars. Even your showroom and offices must be up to a certain standard I'm assuming.

The reason im asking is we want to sell new cars. I could just buy a lot build a show room and buy a bunch of used cars at an auction and sell them but I want a dealer allocation of BMWs

All I can say is I'd be HELLA PISSED if I bought a car from you and found out that you're service department wasn't complete. I've found that the dealership at which you purchase your car is generally cooler about service. If you go to another dealership for service they are like did u buy the car here? No? ohhhh, um well no loaner car and we'll get to it when we can. You'd pretty much be saying we'll sell you the car but if something goes wrong take it somewhere else for the 1st year or two.

BMW NA will not let you start a dealership with no service department...moreover, it must be designed to meet BMWs strict standards. Even now, dealerships service depts. are rebuilt every few years to update them....

How close is the nearest existing authorized BMW dealership (to where you want to build)? Established dealerships will fight, and use their leverage with the corporation to prevent you from getting approved.

I'm not trying to diss your attempt, and I hope this works out for you. I just think that someone who is looking for advice on a message board populated (en mass) by very young people on how to go through with such a large undertaking is kind of odd. It's like the old saying - if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it.

My father has been in the auto industry for nearly 30 years, and has worked a little for dealerships, but mainly for the corporations. It takes an established dealership YEARS to take on a new line.

You should be dealing with BMW, NA EXCLUSIVELY, and privately.

Its not me trying to put together the dealership. my father is. we are also working to bring in about 500-1000 top executives per year from manufaturing companies that all need new cars, so why not open a dealer for them. we have an established customer base, all i need is the dealer allocation is basically what im trying to say.

The clostest bmw dealer from where I want to build... would have to be like 20 - 25 minutes drive.

there are 3 BMW dealers from dallas, but none in West plano where I want to build the new one.

there is a porsche dealer, lexus dealer, a jaguar dealer , a mercedes dealer, a hummer/saab dealer, and a ferrari dealer opening soon all where i want to put the bmw dealer. All are within a few miles.

Are you talking about Park and Preston Rd?

Does ANYBODY here (except for maybe Alken) have any idea what they are talking about?

Silly question to start this thread (How to start a "dealer"), and then a bunch of half-baked replies, but at least it's entertaining!

i think the best way to break into the business would be to purchase a dealership that is already for sale, doesnt have to be BMW really.

then with that credibility under ur belt, u can build and start your own BMW dealership, or any dealership you want- and you will have profits from the first dealership to assist in that.

then again, i havent taken a single business class in my life, just the way i would logically look at doing things

I'd take a good hard look at why that dealership is being sold in the 1st place. Usually one that is being sold isn't doing well whether or not that can be seen by the average Joe. This may also mean they don't have the best image in the world.

Thanks, I think?

That was my point - his question is like asking random people how to become a dentist - they all have teeth, therefore, what better source?

My only other suggestion - :google: - that's where I go first!!!:lmao:
