Anyone have a trailer hitch on their E46?

I would love to have a small trailer for hauling crap from Lowe's and such. I know I couldn't tow much, but a small trailer seems possible.

Hopefully, it's easily removed and invisible when so.

Anyone?:dunno:

To my knowledge, there is only one company that makes a hitch for the 3 series. You can only achieve Class 1 rating. The name is Dalan.

I researched it, but you have to drill through the floor pan of your trunk for the install so I desided not to do it.

What does a Class 1 hitch tow?

I went to U-haul, and they quoted me ~$300 for the hitch and install for our cars. Don't remember much info, it was over the summer, and I was looking for a method to tow my motorcycle.

I do - works great.

Da'Lan Hitch.
Try:
trailerhitch.com 1-800 The Hitch or
hitch-web.com
You'll also need to buy a wiring harness for the trailer lights.
Class 1 hitch with 1 1/4 inch receiver
200 lb max tongue weight
Self install - bolts into the trunk well.
Mine has served me well - pulling a track trailer with wheels/tires and tools and also carring a bicycle carrier. YMMV.

That sounds exactly like what I need.

Is the mount visible?

Have any pics?

There is a factory hitch available in Europe. Here is a page from the ETK for a hitch retrofit kit for the touring. I believe the hitch kit alone costs about $600. The electrical retrofit kit is $180 if needed. The hitch has a 50mm ball which is close enough to 2" to use with 2" trailer stuff in the US. Minor trimming of the rear bumper cover may be necessary but the area trimmed may not be visible from behind the car.

I just got this from James at BimmerHaus:

"Da'lan make a receiver style hitch. 200lb tongue weight 2000lb towing capacity. The unit goes for $223.42 + shipping. They recommend the computer bypass converter for the wiring. $49.23. We can drop ship directly to you, all I need is a CC# and a shipping address.

Thanks,

James"

That should be enough info for you.

For what it is worth I have heard nothing but positive things about BimmerHaus. I have only had email exchanges with them but they are knowledgeble and support many BMW racers and autoxers.

Take care

I need to fix this: *BMWs are not made to pull anything(except the X5)* Do you want to haul your bike on a long trip instead of riding the trip

that's not true. i see all sorts of BMW's over here in germany with tow hitches. i've seen 5series towing horse trailers!:yikes: but by far the strangest thing i saw was an M5 with a tow hitch. i also beleive that these cars shouldn't be pulling stuff, but they do.... :dunno:
