Haven't found much on here about either of these tires.

I have a 330ci with the staggered 18" setup. My rear tires are completely shot and I'm mulling my options. I was thinking a good set of all-seasons until recently when I went out and bought a 4wd Jeep, so I'll drive that when it's snowy/icy in the winter. I still have a full spare set of wheels from when I bought the car, the winter set with Blizzaks that ran out last winter and were downright excellent (and expensive) tires - now those wheels are sitting unused in my garage.

So I'm thinking of going back to high-performance summer tires. The two that have caught my eye are the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 and the General G-Max RS. Both tires get very high marks in every review I've seen, and the G-Max won a Tire Rack 2018 comparison test. They're also both a fraction of the cost of some most other UHP tires and really look the part to boot. I can get a full set of either one from Tire Rack for $500-$525.

Does anyone have experience with either of these tires?
I’m also intrigued by the 360 treadwear rating of the G-Max. Although the BFG g-force sport comp-2 is rated at 340 and I wasn’t real impressed with their longevity when I ran those.

So in your experience the Indy 500s do noticeably worse in the cold? I'm in Denver and a lot winter days around here are 40 degrees and dry (unless there's a snowstorm... but I've got a 4x4 Jeep for that). On days when it's relatively cool and dry, I'd like to still commute in my 330. Interesting that you saw such good performance in the wet, most that I've read say that there's a dropoff from dry to wet.

As long as the Indy 500s are good enough for daily driving in the dry cold that would work for me. Any UHP summer tire is probably going to work similar in those conditions. I just want something that I can drive spirited in the summer when the mood strikes, has manners when cruising, and is at least serviceable in dry cooler weather.

I'm not sure what you're expecting but any high performance tire is useless in the cold. But that shouldn't really matter unless you are setting lap times in the winter. I use mine all year round except when it snows. Yes, I go sideways a lot when it's cold, but that just makes the driving experience more fun. That does wear out your rears faster so keep that in mind.

If you want better winter performance, you might want to check out the Continental DWS.

That's the thing though is I don't need great winter/cold performance. Just a tire that works decent as a daily driver in the cool times and something I can rip around in when it's warm. Firestone is running a deal for the next couple days for $100 off, so a set installed out the door on my car is only just over $450. Can't really pass that up.

I ran them for exactly 1 year on my daily 330 and squeezed out aprox. 25,000 if I recall correctly. I rotated mine every 5,000 miles. They wore evenly even with -2.00+ camber. Size was 245/40R17 square.

Being in western NC we don't have much of a winter but I did have moments where it was under 40 degrees and as with any summer UHP tire it's not recommended. the Firehawk's seemed to harden more than other tires I've ran when it was cold.

Warm level grip was great and with my driving out in the mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway runs I didn't exceed the grip level. Noise when worn was louder than other tires I've ran but not too bad. Rain was pretty decent and was comfortable at the limit.

Love the Indy 500s.

Same as potenza re003***8217;s

Used em on my e36 m3 bbs ch square setup. Bought them for my e46 zhp setup the other day.

I have had the Indy 500's in my tirerack cart for months waiting for this summer and only recently heard of the General G-max's. I was talking to Rob43 about a possible suspension upgrade and we eventually got onto the topic of tires. I mentioned that I was looking to buy the Indy's and he suggested I look at the Generals. In his words, the Generals have 1% less traction, barely perceptible, but last a hell of a lot longer and are a bit more comfortable when not on the track (more forgiving sidewall). And at the moment are about $15 less per tire.

I haven't run either of these. just throwing that out there for your consideration. I will likely end up going with the Generals though I would have preferred the Indys because they look aggressiiiiive.

Just ordered a set of the G-Max RS's, if I remember by the time I get them on and drive a bit I'll post back with impressions. Though any summer will feel great compared to the all-seasons I'm on at the moment (Toyo Proxes 4).

Hows ride on the Indy 500s?
Outfitting the wagon with new square rubber (245/40/17), H&R cup kit suspension. It's far from a track car, but I will do a track day here and there. OEM++ type build.

I just don't want to end up hating my self while dailying.

No first hand experience but from what I've read here and other places it is fine for daily driving until they wear down or its cold, then they are a bit louder and harsher.

The impression I got was that the G-Max's feature a more forgiving sidewall, had better tread-wear, and didn't really sacrifice any grip compared to the Indy's.

Compared to my current Continental ExtremeContactSport the Indy 500s are a littler harsher for general driving, harsher on bumps and overall stiffer. I feel the Indy 500s have a more direct response and feeling . They warm up quicker and you can feel the limit of grip better than the Continental.

I daily my 330 with the summers and had no complaints. As other reviewers noted that they are louder when worn compared to the MPSS or 4s or other 300-340 TW tires in the market.

I honestly like the Indy 500s compared to the Continental.

I'll either go with the Michelin 4S IN 245/40 or a 255/40 200 TW tire like a Falken or RE71R.....just because....why not?
