Hello E46 Aficionados!

I am currently scrutinizing my way through eBay, autotrader etc. Hoping to find a Black 2003-2005 E46 M3 SMG.

I would love to hear your thoughts on initial maintenance, items to look for, amenities to avoid etc.

I wrench extensively on my own vehicles & absolutely can NEVER stop modifying my vehicles. My initial impressions of the E46 BMW owners in general is that they not only enjoy the solid build and lasting craftsmanship of these Bavarian beauties, but also enjoy the perks of an almost limitless amount of interior/exterior parts and BPU mods.

Having owned Mercedes, Lexus and Jaguar in the last 5 years, my experiences have been pleasant, but once I drove my business partner's M6 SMG, I've been hooked on the idea of owning a BMW.

What I loved most was the RPM's..... Being stunted to under 7,000rpms in my last 4 cars, just cannot compare to WOT at 8,000+

The thought of purchasing Kreissieg exhaust, EVOsport headers, Dinan ECU software, KW coilovers, Carbon fiber intake etc....
I'm sold on the E46 for sure, but are there diminutive idiosyncrasies from 2002 to 2006? re-sale is NOT a factor, I'm just looking for 35,000miles - 55,000miles max on the odometer, getting a good deal and spending the money on parts.
I realize the M3's engine is impervious, how are the drivetrain components? Suspension? Control arms? bushings etc?

OK, I'll shut up and listen to what you all have to say now! Thank you all for your time

I'm in the same exact boat, thanks for asking the question, but my color combinations extend to silver or mystic blue. Just no gray interiors (I'm sure they are great, I just don't care for them)

Great fun to drive, but Please use search function for coilpacks, vanos failure, subframe, smg pump before making up your mind.

I certainly will. Thanks!
Nice to read a lot of you have had long reliability with the SMG transmission.

Anyone selling a black-on-black or Black-on-red E46 M3, please let me know!

I would turn you on to the M-Specialist dealer I'm getting my e46 from, but they wouldn't touch SMG cars with a 10 foot pole... :yikes:

I've owned my Laguna Seca Blue 2003 SMG Vert since August. I've done some minor interior mods (alcantara SMG Shifter plate, E-60 M5 SMG Shift Knob, xm radio plug in). I thoroughly enjoy this car and if I keep my foot out of it, I'm actually getting 26mpg combined!!

Any car you find, do a thorough pre purchase inspection.

Good luck on your search.
