You’ll want someone more experienced than myself to confirm this and the appropriate action to take, but a quick Google search for “E46 internal control unit fault A12” returns this translated page (see post #155-157): https://translate.googleusercontent...LkJrhhkInhv8R8GGkDHBp7V0OwFwJCscw#post3336877.

Searching for “E46 A12 control unit” returns ScottJoh’s webpage on K-Bus devices: http://www.bmwgm5.com/e46_k-bus.htm, which shows the A12 unit being the “Multiple Restraint System Control Unit.”

Lot of information out there on "E46 MRS unit" that you might search around for, but here are a couple quick reads that might be relevant.

Center Console Removal & SRS Module Replacement: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=734286
MRS control unit corrosion: http://e46fanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=929806

Whatever the case may be, it's likely a DIY and much less than $2,600 to fix. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in, but the above should get your search started.
