Hey guys. First post and new to the forum. I just bought my first used BMW and I'm trying to fix the major problems before winter (heater, small clear coat issue and some ECU problems) . My automatic 2003 330xi has been having some trouble shifting into first gear and reverse from a cold start. Once the trans is warmed up for the day the "hesitation" is completely gone. The car will sort of "creep" forward in a sense for close to half a minute before engaging the first gear. I've searched a few posts and I've read the cause of the problem could be anything from a trans solenoid or shift bushings, to merely changing the trans fluid. There could be a laundry list of things that I need to check out before I get this solved. I basically want to know if there are any differences in the trans module that I should be aware of if I were to replace the solenoid since the XI transmissions are obviously a bit different than the standard RWD BMWs. What to look for in trans fluid. I basically want to know where to start. I have access to a lift and tools but I'm a rookie with technical fixes. I can change oil, spark plugs, filters and all of the basics. I know better than to pay out of pocket at a garage. Thanks

Change you fluid and filter to see if you have enough fluid.

Common problem from heat and time will cause rubber seals.to allow more fluid. Need to rebuild If you want to fix .it.

do a fluid and filter change. buy 2x as much fluid as you need because you are going add new fluid, drive it, and change filter and add new fluid again.

then add xado transmission additive. http://xado.us/revitalizant/maximum-transmission-with-1-stage-revitalizant

i purchased 2 syringes of this. 1 for my tranny and the other for my diffs and transfer case. Seriously, do it!!

no clunking.
^ I would not add anything to any fluid in my car ever that wasn't specified from the factory...

your position is not uncommon. failed reasoning though; you have no problem using powerflex, or adding an intake or sprint system.. but adding a proven oil additive is out of the question? hmm. i bet my car runs better than yours.

I don't have powerflex bushings, I run the stock intake, and have never had a sprint system. With the exception of aftermarket shocks and springs, my car is bone stock in every way. In any case, adding stuff to transmission fluid is different than replacing an entire component.

Making the claim that your car runs better than mine is a bold one...

Thanks for all of the help guys! I'm probably just going to check the fluid and if all goes well, run some new trans fluid through with a new filter and change it shortly after and see what happens.
