Newbie to this site but have looked on it many times and as of last week own a Orient 2002 330 ci, Im having a bit of dilemma with putting on new tires and rims. I have the original 68 style sport rims currently on the sport suspension. I have a set of 18x8.5's with a 40 offset id like to put on but I am not sure if they will fit without rub etc. Someone more knowledgeable then me would be much appreciated

They will fit fine. If they rub, it will be on the rear fenders only, and only on full compression of the suspension. The rubbing should be so slight that it is cured by carefully pounding the fender liner out of the way of the tire.

The width and offset are in spec. All we don't know is the bolt pattern and size of the center hole, but if these are good then the wheels you asked about will be perfect for your car.

Your tire size will be a 225/40x18, or a 235/40x18. I think the 225 is a far more common size, and therefore is cheaper to buy.

Much thanks JD, and the bolt pattern is the 5 point star. Would 5-120 be the bolt pattern? Not very good with what the different numbers mean when it comes to wheels and tires. Originally these were on another BMW so shouldn't the pattern be the same?

That is very cool Kaktus but it doesn't exactly show if it will fit on a certain car or not, just shows how much bigger it'll be then previous or vice versa. If it could tell me that x size rim/tire would fit on x car without rub etc, it would be really cool or maybe i just don't understand all the numbers enough to make that assumption.

Those should fit fine, takes like 5 minutes to swap a single wheel over without air tools so just test it out... If I can manage to fit 20x10 et35 on the rear, 18x8.5 et40 should fit with tons of room

Yes, 5x120 is a 5-bolt pattern on a 120mm circle.

The center hole of a 5 Series wheel is larger than the center hole of a 3 Series, so if you wanted to use a 5 Series wheel on a 3, you need hub-centric rings.

Your selected wheel has a 40mm offset (ET), but the factory wheel that's an 8.5x18 has an offset of 50. This only means that these wheels will be 10 mm more to the outboard side than the factory options. If you measured from the back side of the wheel hub to the centerline of the wheel, you would have the offset. More offset makes the wheel deeper on the backside, lower offset makes the wheel deeper on the front. If the offset is too high, the wheel or tire might rub on suspension components. If the offset is too low then the tire can rub on the body of the car. You can cure a high offset with spacers to move the tire away from the suspension. You cure low offset by moving the fenders away from the tires, this is called, rolling. A body shop can roll the fenders easily, sometimes you can roll your own fenders at home. Mostly it depends on how far the fenders need to be rolled.

Im going to put the factory x5 rims back on and use the tires that are on my black rims on the factories since they are both 18s and the same. Pretty much just trying to save money by reusing rims instead of getting new ones for my 330 for summer and new tires.

Just buy some nice coils that drop at least 3in, then 20mm spacers and poke the style 68s

I think all BMW models except the e39 5 series have the same 72.56mm hub size. Even if the hub size isn't the same, it will be larger so you could just buy a hub centric ring and it will be fine.

Bolt pattern should be stamped on the back of the wheel. If you have a minute post up a picture so we can take a look.

Depends on the year X5 I think 2007+ have a 74.1 centerbore so you may need hubcentric rings to avoid any excess vibration.

Is there a link or reference that tells you what the "Factory" sizes are... (i.e. 5x120, offset, Hub size, 18x10, etc..) I ask... because much like the OP, I too want to swap out my factory 17" Sport Wheels for a set of Silver Style 42 in 18's... but I dont want anything wild... I simply just want to stay with the standard size 18" wheels just in the Style 42 model. I am also trying to research and better understand the terminology on "Square" vs "Stagger" wheel configuration as well. Currently the car has on the Front: 225 45z/R17 .....and on the Rear: 245 40z/R17, which I believe is considered a staggard configuration, but I'm not a 100%. I love the way the car handles and I would want to keep the same size wheels if I can, just on 18's..

There is a website somewhere that lists all that info for every single bmw made but i cant seem to find it. I do know that my 330ci is 5x120, 72.56 center bore, 18x8.5 with an offset of 40. The factory is 5x120, 72.56, with an offset between like 37-45 or so. i am running 225/40/r18 all around right now. If you have the sport with the lowered suspension, be wary as 235's may rub in the front if u have 18's so stick with the 225s. If you run 225/40/r18s in front and 245/40/18 in back you'll be good
