Well, since you have four rims that are all the same size, why not put four tires on that are --- wait for it --- all the same size?

I'm not sure the 255s will be a good fit, you may find that a 245/40 works better.

Whether or not you need spacers depends on what the ET is.

i have 4 of the 255/40's but they just seem rediculous in the front as far as handling, astetics, rubbing, etc. u think 245 wouldnt cause an issue w/ rubbing up front?

I was thinking 225 up front cuz thats what i have on my 944 and even though its wayyy lighter its still got similar dynamics e.g. front engine, rwd, 50/50 wieght dist.. but thats if 225's fit on 17x8.5 rims

225 on a 8.5 no problem at all, 255 on the other hand...

Front: 235/40-17

Rear: 255/40-17

Both will work just fine on 17 X 8.5"

225 is a little bit of a stretch .. Need at least 235, 245. I have 235 on 8.5 and it seems like ideal size would be 245 (doesn't look squared if you know what I mean)

255/40/17 fits all around. Wheels with the proper offset (et50 to 55 or so) will fit in back with little or no fender rolling. The same wheel and tire will need a 10mm to 15mm spacer up front.

The same tire all around is what the car needs for proper handling. Stagger is useless, handles worse, and costs more because tires cannot be rotated.

225 is fine.
my R3 came with 225's on 19 x 8.5
stretch is not always a bad thing, it tightens up the tires so you have more feel to the road.
I switched to 245 on those wheels and the tightness just disappeared.

Since its a square setup I would recommend 245 all around. If staggered than 225 front 245 rear. 245 all around will be fine even on lowered springs

so 245/40 all around seems to be the general consensus here. so no spacers needed with 245s up front?

just curious why does it seem like people dont like the staggered setup on the e46? (eg 255 back 235 front)

understeer and you cannot rotate tires.
