I have a 2004 325ci and it doesn't look like that. It looks like my old 2000 328ci. It has the rims of a 2004 and maybe the bumper. The side skirt is 1999-2000 style. 2001-2002 had the silver slots in the bumper.

To test his story that the front has been changed you could ask for a photo of the rear. The boot lid and handle were different on facelifts.

But I'd also be asking for photos of all the VIN locations. I'd be suspicious the original VINs on the vehicle had been cut out and those from a 2004 welded in, and I'd be looking for any evidence.

Run the VIN through a BMW VIN decoder.

Yep, facelift boot lid. Maybe he's telling the truth after all.

Possibly the car had front-end damage and they repaired it with used parts from a pre-facelift. They'd be more plentiful so cheaper, and, let's face it, better looking..

For what it's worth, it's also got the style 119 wheels that would have came on an '04.

It looks like he didn't do much prep to get it ready for sale though. It doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling that he would have kept up on maintenance if he can't even bother to wash the car before trying to sell it.

I've read several posts in the last few years that asked if this was possible and although anything can be done, I remember reading that it's not a bolt-on 'conversion'.

RealOEM tells me that Style 119 were available for my 2002. Googles images search shows lots of pre-2004 E46's with Style 119.

No license plates tells me it's an auction flip.

I've seen it the other way around, a facelift front on a pre-facelift. As far as I understand, it involves changing wings/fenders, bonnet/hood, lights, bumper brackets etc. But if they're all trashed and need changing anyway because the driver rear-ended someone and didn't have full coverage... All that is bolt off, bolt on. Even though there is quite a bit to bolt off and on.
