Hey guys, I bought a 3.30Ci 3 months ago. And it was converted from auto transmission. Now I have 3.38 final drive ratio and it makes my top speed about 230-240 km/h at 7000rpm. Besides, at my normal cruising speeds (90-100 km/h) my engine rev is so high (about 3000rpm @100km/h). Of course I can change my differential to normalize but with that differential my acceleration is so good. I want higher top speed and lower rpm at normal cruising speed. So I decided to convert my transmission to 6 speed. I live in Turkey, so I can't easily find 6 speed e46 transmission. Which transmission should I bought? And which parts I need to change with transmission? Has anyone made this swap before? I need some advice from people did it. Thanks a lot.

Engine: M54B30
Transmission: 5 speed manual from E36. It might be 3.23 or 3.25 getrag i'm not sure about it.

note: I can't buy '03 or higher E46 3.30Ci with 6 speed transmission because that car is super rare in my country and even if I find it the price difference is so high (about 10,000 euros)

As far as I know the only 6 speed that came in an E36 was in a euro facelift M3. Which will also have a high price.
The Getrag 260 in the e36 are 5 speeds.

Yes. And the BMW 6 speeds are from a E36 facelift M3, an E46 M3 or an E46 330. (or pretty much any car with a m54 and a 6speed).
All will be expensive.
oh yes unfortunately.. what do you think about using e90 6 speed transmission and buy extra adjustment parts for using it. or some people insist about there were some 3.20i E46 with 6 speed transmission. their price is lower but i don't know anything about that car. I know all 3.20s are 5 speed transmission. am i or are they wrong? thanks btw

I don't know if the ratios are the same but the 320d manual also had a 6-speed, and they must have sold a million of those in Europe. Certainly far more than they sold manual 330i (sadly). Could you not find one of those more cheaply, if it would work? Even if you had to go to, say, Germany to pick it up?

Only the petrol 330 got the 6 speed, not the 320. I think 320d did get a 6 speed.
The only easy option is the GS6-53BZ from the 330i or Getrag 420g from the e46 M3.
The diesel transmissions have a different bolt pattern and are not direct bolt on.
The diesel ratios are a bit higher, first gear would be useless. 6th gear a very small bit better.
Petrol is 53BZ, Diesel is 53DZ

diesel transmissions my other option. because of the reasons you tell. different gear ratios and they're not bolt on

According to this artice zf 6speed manuals are made for these cars

GS6-37BZ — THEG

  • BMW E46 (325ti, 330i/Ci)
  • BMW E60 (520i, 525i (M54), 530i (M54))
  • BMW E61 (525i)

I swapped my gearbox a few years ago, there is a few bits you need If you do find a GS6-37BZ gearbox.

You will need to replace the flywheel and clutch kit with the 6 speed version, the support bearing for the input shaft is built into the flywheel on the 6 speed which unlike the 5 speed which is pressed into the end of the crankshaft. (you will need to remove this too, it stops the new flywheel fitting)

The 6 speed clutch kit has 22 splines vs 10 on the 5speed, also prop shaft is shorter so you need this too.

Don‘t forget the gear selector set up too, these are different between 5 and 6 speed!

I don’t remember much else being different other than maybe the odd bolt for the bell housing mounting, the lengths where slightly different.

£700 plus £95 worldwide delivery any good?

edit - arghh! Just see the small print last line "delivery to EU only". Despite the listing saying worldwide at the top . Sorry.
now i checked that link and they can delivery to turkey but main problem is price unfortunately. i probably try to find that transmission in my country. £1= ₺10.2 :(

thanks for the info man, that actually helps a lot. E60 is more common in my country. maybe i can find it saying "i'm looking E60 manual transmission"

thanks man these informations are so important and valuable. this swap is also very rare in my country. so mechanics don't know what they exactly need to do. it saves much time, appreciated

Same in my country. Actually me too now are preparing for transmission swap, and i found only gearbox from e60. Only sad part is that i have to buy lots of OEM parts for gear shifter because those from E60 doesn't match for E46.
