Hey guys, my e46 makes kind of a grinding/humming noise while driving at around 1-3k rpm's in first and second gear. it doesn't do it if the clutch is in, it's almost like the noise our cars make in reverse, but not as loud. Is this a problem? Any way to fix it? I've tried searching, but everyone else who is experiencing a grinding seems to have the noise while shifting. I drove a g35 today, and it seemed very smooth, no humming whatsoever. I notice it most when driving in a parking lot in 1st gear at around 2k rpm's. What could this be?

Anybody?? It's more of a humming, but it doesn't sound very smooth at all.

I drive a 330ci, 2001 manual 5 speed, and I cannot recall ever hearing a noise like this on my car.

  • How long have you owned it? Has it always made this noise?
  • How many miles on the transmission?
  • Have you changed the fluid?
  • Anything change, or any work done, just prior to the noise?

I've only had it 6 months, so I have no idea how long it's done it.
Car just turned 130k, so I'm assuming the trans fluid has never been changed. I've been meaning to do it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. it's been doing it since I bought it.
