Hello my name is Jorge and I need help on a project I just got myself into tips/help so I recently got a free 2000 bmw 328i with a bad motar I don’t have much money and experience I was wondering what engines I can do a direct plug and play into the car or what type of swap I can do that’s cheap and easy thank you for your time :)

I believe somone one told me the motor is a m52b28tu unfortunately I don’t have a photo atm. And the old motor runs and drive but it don’t pass 3k rpm and the old owner said the car has rod knock it has a banging noise coming from the motor but there’s no metal shards in the oil and also the car likes to die randomly so i believe it’s not repairable in my opinion

find the same motor used and i replace the following and then drop it in:
  1. OIl pan gasket
  2. Oil pickup tube O-ring
  3. OIl dipstick O-ring
  4. OFH gasket
  5. Front/rear main
  6. hard coolant pipes under manifold
  7. All CCV & hoses
  8. intake manifold gasket
  9. DISA rebuild
  10. TB gasket
  11. 6x ccv distribution manifold o-rings
  12. injector O-rings
  13. Get a coolant pipe O-ring kit off ebay and change all the coolant O-rings on the hoses if they are in decent shape
  14. valve cover gasket & gromets
  15. water pump & new t-stat
  16. intake boot if its torn or looking terrible
  17. idler pulleys if they are making noise
Or you could gamble and just throw in the motor without doing anything and you will most likley end up doing that entire list slowly over time.

Jorge, you gotta do you, but nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW, and a free BMW is probably the most expensive of them all..

I suggest you walk away and sell this project to somebody else.

In my opinion, it’s going to cost you $3,000 minimum to get this on the road in safe condition. And that assumes you do all the work, which will take you 3 weeks to a month working nights and weekends..

having said all that,

For the easiest plug and play replacement, you want an M52TUB28.. it came in 328i, 528i and Z3 2.8 from ’99-‘00…You can find an engine from LQK or Car-part.com, but if you get a warranty, read and follow every word. Buying a running parts car with engine is usually the cheapest option. And pulling the engine out of both cars might give the experience you need to install it.
