My alternator went out last night (battery light flickering, had to push to start and drive home, lights dim and no speakers), and I have some questions for finding a replacement alternator.

What is the part number for an alternator for the 2000 328i?
I know the remanufactured Bosch it is: AL0738X (http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/AL0738X)
NEW Bosch is: AL0703N (http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/AL0703N)

I prefer to buy a new one (AL0703N), does that alternator fit my car? or do I have to go for the reman (AL0738X).

I'm asking this because I read somewhere that the 323/328 and the 325/330 have different alternator connectors.

BMW sourced alternators from Bosch and Valeo, a French company. The alternators are not interchangeable without major work. The only way to find out which brand of alternator lives under the hood is to read the label at the back of the alternator. You'll need to remove the air cleaner box and the upper air hose. You'll need a flashlight and a mirror. The label will tell you the capacity in amps of the alternator.

If the alternator is a Bosch you can replace the voltage regulator. A new Bosch voltage regulator costs about $50.
